Colombia is a country with a high level of human warmth and hospitality, with hard working individuals that are creative and willing to get the job done no matter the obstacles. Moreover, despite the socio economic challenges and the media and movie makers’ disgraceful advertisement, Colombia accounts for a positive and happy society. Certainly, Colombians reflect their amazing values and principles when doing business.
The following points should be taken into account when addressing business meetings in Colombia.
• It is recommended to schedule business meetings with two or three weeks in advance. In addition, calculate two or three hours per business meeting. • Colombians are very proud of their culture and their national achievements; therefore, learn as much as you can about their culture, it will be an excellent strategy to start a strong relationship. Topics such as music, soccer, cuisine, coffee, and art are always welcome; certainly, avoid topics in regard to drugs, religion, cartels as Colombians will not be appreciative of such discussions.
• Colombian’s appreciate punctuality, consequently, it is recommended to arrive on time, nevertheless, it is quite likely that their Colombian counterparts do not and arrive 15 or 20 minutes late.
• It is respectful to address most individuals for the university title and their last name. Only children, relatives and close friends call each other by first name or nickname.
• At the beginning of each meeting always expect social conversations; this is a sign that personal relationships are a paramount for Colombian organizations.
