Should College Athletes Get Paid?
One of the biggest controversies in the sports world is if student athletes should be paid on salary. Some believe that they should be paid and others would love to beg to differ. Student athletes are paid in many ways through scholarships and tuition grants that cover their room and board and meal plans. With this, only their education is being paid for by the school. After a lot of research, it would not be smart to put college athletes on salary. College athletes should not be paid at all because they are basically being paid to study and exercise their talents through a sport.

Kenneth J. Cooper stated that, “Two law professors at Michigan State University, Robert and Amy McCormick, think it is definitely a job for football and basketball players on athletic scholarships at Division I schools” (Cooper). But in reality, college athletes are considered students because they are there for school, and not for work. In a way students are being paid, but only their education is being paid by the school and scholarships or financial aid. “The NCAA, in accordance with courts that have addressed the issue, believes that student athletes are not employees, under the law, and that they should not be treated as employees either by the law or by the schools they attend” (Cooper). But if the players were paid it would not be fair at all because of how will the money be distributed among the players. Everyone would most likely agree that the star players on the team would most likely be paid the most because they are considered the best on the team and probably were given a full ride scholarship to play and attend the school. But for example, a role player or a bench player who does not play at all would probably be paid a lot less than a star player.
