The day I had dreamed about my whole life finally came, the day that I became a senior. At first it was great being considered the senior, but my feelings quickly changed once everything started coming to an end. I had my last first day, my last volleyball practice and game, my last football game, and now my last vaudeville and soon there will be many more lasts to come. I had always thought that I couldn’t wait to become a senior and be the big dogs in school, but now that it’s finally here I wish I still had more time. Looking back, I only think of all the chances I didn’t take and all of the regrets I have because I thought I had forever, but they weren’t kidding when they said time flies. I finally came out of my shell and grew enough courage to take classes and do events my middle school self never would’ve imagined doing, like vaudeville and the musical. Something inside me really stepped up when I became a high schooler, because I’ve made the best grades I’ve ever made now and because of that I’ve been accepted into many great schools, like Purdue. I became a friend that I wish I had, a mentor to underclassmen, and a role model to my younger sibling and cousins. I have entered so many clubs since I’ve started high school; Pep club, Beta Club, Sunshine Society, FCA, Anti-bullying, Girl Talk, ITS, Student Council, and Peers Project. Overwhelming? Yes, is it worth it?
As young girl with big dreams I imagined my senior year of high school to be one of the best years of my life. I imagined going to homecoming with all of my friends, being the captain of the varsity soccer and cheerleading teams, going to Friday night football games, going to Prom with my perfect date, and going on a senior trip with all of my best friends. I never imagined my senior year to be the way that it is. I am the new kid.
People say high school is supposed to be the golden years of your life. I don’t know what else in life is to come; however, my philosophy is to live in the moment and make the life you’re living in the present worthwhile into the future, not only for you but for those who surround you. I live my life participating in our community and getting involved in our school. The activities, and the people I’ve formed relationships with, are what have formed me into the person I have become today. The person I am today is not perfect, but I have learned from the mistakes I’ve made. I think the sense of maturity I have developed throughout my life has given me the determination to be the best person I can be. That being said, I would love to be inducted into the National Honor Society and not only represent our school, but represent our generation to the community not as a “selfie” generation but as a generation, with great potential.
High school is meant to be the time of your life, but for most seniors just like me it can be some of the most emotional and crazy time. The things in my past make me who I am today, and the things I do now are the first footsteps into the future. I’ve learned a lot about myself in these past four years, and I still have so much learning to do. This is my high school story; the good, bad, and the ugly.
Wow, three years have passed and the last day is just as long as the first. Three years of hard discipline and learning to get used to homework every night. Three years of standing on the front steps waiting for my parents and saying goodbye to my teachers. I never thought the goodbye might be permanent. 6th grade came and I was looking up at those giant 8th graders, and now I guess I’m one of them. 6th grade, and I was saying hello, and now 8th grade has come and it’s gone from introductions to goodbyes as my last days as a middle school student wind down.
The experience of the APEC Youth Science festival was incredible. It has had an enormous impact on me in many ways, changing the way I look at the world and connecting me with people and events far beyond my formerly limited experience. I am extremely glad to have had this opportunity. It was a wonderful experience on multiple levels. It challenged me and expanded me intellectually and socially. I feel that this experience has had an immense impact on me.
It seemed like it would make her die, just speaking it. So I didn't tell anyone, not even my best friends. At school I would slip into a fantastical dreamland, nobody there knew that I should be troubled, pensive. I put on my best front and paraded around the school halls with some sort of smile plastered on my face. At lunchtime I'd stare at my food thinking that my friends should know. I thought of a million different ways to tell them. Each time that I came close to telling them, I would think about their potential reactions. There would be the normal lunchtime banter going on, complaints about the ranch dressing, and I would blurt out, "Hey guys, my mom has breast cancer." The whole cafeteria would turn silent and the plastic forks would drop from their hands, making a sad little clinking noise. Then I would stare at my food mentally kicking myself for having opened my mouth. I chose to say nothing. I remember very clearly the day that I went to go sit with her while she got her chemotherapy. I only did this once because it was too hard for me. I walked down an overly-lit sterile hallway trailing behind my dad. When we reached her room I wished that I could just keep walking, pretend I hadn't seen her. I went in and sat down. Her shirt was partially unbuttoned so that the IV could be inserted into the porto-cath surgically implanted under her collarbone. She was hooked up to three different kinds of poisons, and one normal IV. There were some knitting things spread across her lap and the ever present bag of lemon drops was faithfully at her side. Her head was laid back in the chair, she was tired. She and my dad tried to involve me in some nice chit-chat, I met and shook hands with the doctors and nurses, "It's nice to meet you Dr. McCoy." Yeah right. They complimented her on what a beautiful daughter she had. I blushed, smiled politely then excused myself to the bathroom. I wiped away my forming tears and gave myself a mental pep talk to be cheery. As long as I didn't look at her tired eyes I was OK. Half an hour later, she was done and we got to go home.
The word opportunity has been stressed to me my whole life and has caused me to really ponder its true definition. On my quest to find the significance of opportunity I first began to think of the different types of freedoms that I’ve been presented with on a daily basis. From the simple things, such as being able to breathe, wake up, and see, to the more substantial matters such as freedom, education, and shelter. After listing a seemingly infinite examples of personal liberties in my head, I realized there is no “true” definition to the word. What I found out is that opportunity is whatever you make the word out to be.
I am Cassandra Cleveland and I am Junior in the Health Sciences Program in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences. Along with working towards my bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences, I am also working toward two minors which are psychology and health administration, with a certificate in nutrition. I believe I possess many of the vital qualities and skills that coincide with a student in the Top 100 at IUPUI. In my short 20 years of life I have been through an immense amount of hardships and difficulties. I am approaching the five year anniversary of the day that changed my life forever.
While everybody is ready for graduation, something didn’t feel right to me. I didn’t feel like I had accomplished anything. I wasn’t accepted into any colleges like everyone else, and that’s because I didn’t even apply. I wasn’t prepared for anything, let alone college. I’m not in high school anymore. It was a game to me and I finally ran out of lives. There’s not as many chances outside of high school. I’ve come to the realization that I need to listen to my counselor and get it together and be more like my best friends and work towards a goal until I accomplish it. I needed to change my and realize that my past doesn’t have to determine my future. I wanted to grasp the concept of, “it’s never to late.” I desired to become a better version of myself. I craved to the idea of a positive purpose in life. I wanted to earn the respect and admiration of others. I wanted to be better. At last, my mind is exactly where it’s suppose to be, and I have come to the recognition that all I need it just one more
The Events that Changed My Life From a very young age, I had always wanted to be a professional ballet dancer; it was the center of my world. As my passions changed I had to make the hardest decision of my life and realize that my true passion is to become a doctor. Last year, there were several events that completely turned my life around to help me make this difficult decision. First off, my grandfather was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).
I can almost remember that day like it was yesterday, I awoke like on any other school day. It was a gorgeous May morning, the rays of sun flittered through my miniblinds blinding me as if I hadn’t seen light in days. I sluggishly dragged my limp body out of my warm bed, retiring to the bathroom to perform my normal morning rituals shower, shave, brush my teeth, get dressed, do my hair, and all the other regulars. As I looked at myself while combing my hair, it hit me like a speeding express train, I was about to graduate. I couldn’t help but smile, but at the same time I felt like a part of me was drifting away. A tear came to my eye as I realized what was about to happen to me.
It was one of the most exciting and nerve racking days of our lives. Although we were finally leaving high school, the feeling of being unsure didn’t go away. The whole day was full of practicing for the big moment when the entire class graduated on to a new beginning. All the girls wore shiny bright red robes and the guys were dressed in a shiny navy blue. Standing there, I had no idea what to expect. Some things I were aware of, my friends were leaving and we wouldn’t be the same friends anymore. My role was that of being so aware of the future that I was too shocked to soak in the present; being a pessimist was my main goal and everything I was sure of became true.
You know, it is really strange how quickly time passes, after spending my whole childhood wishing I was an adult, now here we are and it's a little hard to grasp. It feels like just yesterday I was standing here in the same position at eighth grade graduation. Ahh, middle school, such a joyous time for all of us, free of maturity and not a care in the world. The biggest decisions I ever had to make then was deciding which group to stand with at passing time and choosing which shirt from my extensive collection of Stussy and No Feat apparel to wear. We were all naive to the danger that lurked just around the corner. We were unaware that the carefree world we lived in was about to come crashing to the ground in a blazing inferno of real school work and responsibility ... otherwise known as high school.
My senior year of high school…I want to enjoy people’s company, appreciate my family’s presence, and keep a permanent Polaroid of my “home town” etched in my memory. I have a purpose for the year, I know what I want to accomplish for the future, but I have to remember to make the most out of today because there may not always be a tomorrow.
Graduation: the last day that I would unwillingly set foot on the fields of Horizon High School. I could feel my heart beating out of my chest, and tried so hard to keep my feet moving one after the other in order to maintain my perfect stature. After the two hour wait of opening speeches, class songs, and the calling off of the five hundred plus names that were in front of me, it was finally my turn. As my row stood up and we walked towards the stage it had set in at last, this is it, I am done. My high school career ended on that night, but it didn’t close the book that is my life, it only started a new chapter, and with it came a whole slue of uncertainties.
