Contributing to my community is a very important part of who I am. Growing up in Prince George’s County, Maryland, I have been able to meet people from many races, religions, socio-economic statuses, and other different classifications. This is important as it puts me outside of my norm so I can fully experience the world and its inhabitants. Therefore, I hope to become a Shawn Carter scholar and contribute towards something that would make a difference in my community. Knowing that I had a hand in creating a healthy community benefits bring about a sense of accomplishment. Socially, it helps build relationships that can last for many years. Cognitively, my personal knowledge was enhanced and any biases or stereotypes that I had prior to volunteering was diminished. It has helped me develop into a well-rounded individual consciously aware of my surroundings and those inhabiting it. Partaking in community service is a very selfless contribution to society that I believe everyone should do. In order to fulfill at least 25 hours of community service hours as a scholar, I would partner with a local animal shelter. I would volunteer at an animal shelter because there is a constant intake of animals and volunteers are desperately needed. I have always wanted to act on my passion for animals and give back but I have never had the chance. Working with rescue animals is a very rewarding and selfless act. I am providing comfort and love to animals that may not have come from such loving backgrounds. This helps them come out of their shell and become more desirable to adopters.
