Internal Medicine is my career choice. Musicians spend countless hours practicing their skills to achieve perfection, detectives investigate to solve cases and teachers educate to influence young minds. As an Internist, I see myself doing all of the above. I want to master the process of investigating, diagnosing and managing patients, as well as educating my patients thus empowering them to make choices that could improve their health and well-being. My journey into Internal Medicine began at the age of seven when I was admitted to a hospital in a small island called Grand Turk apart of the Turks and Caicos Islands. At that time, I was ill with a severe abdominal pain, which later turned out to be nothing more than a stomach virus. During my admission however, I fell in love with the medical field and that experience kindled my fascination with the human body, how it worked and the disease processes that affect it. Of course, it had its ups and downs but I equate it to an EKG tracing… because if it was a flat line then it would have been a 'dead' experience. The clinical rotations I participated in, I enjoyed immensely. However, after finishing medical school and completing a compulsory 18 months internship period, I was unsure of what specialized area I should pursue. This uncertainty led me to accept a general practitioner job in a small rural hospital close to the town where I grew up. Many individuals thought I was wasting my talents, but to me it was an opportunity to acquire some needed working experience.
