Many barriers prevent effective communication within inter-professional teams. Lack of communication within MDTs presents challenges to their success, leading to numerous consequences, including the failure of the MDT (London Deanery, 2012; Sargeant et al, 2008). Communication between professionals is the key factor underpinning the potential success or failure of inter-professional teams, the outcome of the functioning of MDTs will either benefit or impair care of patients.
In an effort to double, or even triple the responsiveness of the healthcare delivery systems, inter-professional collaboration should not be overlooked. A proper understanding of the inter-professional collaboration among health regulators, educators, professionals, along with professional associations is important. It familiarizes them with inter-professional relationships in their aim to tackle difficult health problems, which increase on a daily basis.
The practice of using inter-professional teams in delivering care is not a new concept but current health policy requires professionals work within a multidisciplinary team Department of Health (2001) and entrenched in the Nursing and Midwifery Council (2008) Code. In today’s time with technology and patients having more complicated disease, it is important to collaborate with the interdisciplinary team. People learn by example especially when surrounded by it. For instance, on my surgical intensive care unit (SICU), there are many teams of physician. For the majority of the time the physicians are receptive to suggestions and will ask for opinions from those involved in the care of his patient which is engaging in multidisciplinary care. There is only one physician who is arrogant and always blaming others for issues that are beyond the control of the mid-level practitioner or nurse.

In health care, one of the largest areas that can be improved in is patient interaction. Being anywhere in healthcare is stressful and takes a special kind of person with good communication skills to perform their duties at the highest of their abilities. Explaining everything to your patient, allowing them to ask questions, letting them ponder on their options that the Doctor gives them and just being there and communicating with them is what every patient would love.
