.Characters: Santiago- Is the main character of The Alchemist. He travels from Andalusia in southern Spain to the Egyptian pyramids to search for a hidden treasure, learning life lessons along the way. He is very faithful, perseverant, and hardworking. Old Woman -A fortune teller that interprets Santiago's recurring dream. She comes of creepy, conniving and untrustworthy. Melchizedek/King of Salem- Is an old man who from the Old Testament, and explains what a Personal Legend is and pushes Santiago to follow his dream. The kings is wise, generous, and kind. Crystal Merchant- A man of Tangier that hires Santiago to work in his shop. He is one of the people in the story that contrast Santiago because her is not of who goes after his personal legend. He can be described as contempt, deterrent. Alchemist- Is an extraordinary man that lives at the oasis and can turn any metal into gold. The alchemist helps Santiago make the journey from the oasis to the Egyptian pyramids. He can be described as wise, patient and understanding Fatima- Is an Arab girl who lives at the oasis. Setting: The Alchemist takes place in multiple places. It takes place in the Spanish pastures, Tarifa, Tangier, and the Sahara desert. B. Symbols: Crystal Glassware: It represent the fragility of ones dreams and how easily it can be broken. Desert: The desert is symbolic for all the difficulty and hardship a persona has to endure before they reach their goal. Shepherds and Sheep: The relationship between the two different forms of life symbolizes the open barrier between all life form and how they can be connected without speaking the exact same language.
