Fashion designer Coco Chanel, who was born as Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel was born August 19, 1883, in Saumur, France. Later, she claimed her date of birth to be 1893, which would make her 10 years younger. She was raised as a child in an orphanage. Her mother passed away when she was six years old. At the monastery, Chanel was taught to sew. As she grew older, the more the technique became functional.

When she turned 18, she decided to leave the orphanage, and take up work for a local tailor. During this time, she had a brief career as a singer. As a singer in cafés and concert halls, Gabrielle adopted the name Coco. Throughout this period, it was World War 1. She started a new relationship with a wealthy English Industrialist called Arthur Edward 'Boy' Capel. He was an English polo play. Chanel knew he would be able to help her develop her career.

Arthur Edward 'Boy' Capel saw the potential in Chanel and offered to finance her first designer shop at 21. Some of his fashion styles inspired her with the creation of the Chanel designs. At the time, she was creating only hats under the name “Chanel Modes” favored by the most famous French actress of all time. Her designs gained her reputation and was soon known all over Paris.
