Joźe Kotar, a Slovenian clarinettist ran a masterclass for several UTAS students, on 8/3/2018 in the Performing Arts Centre at Collegiate. This allowed us to observe both specific clarinet analyses and general performance techniques and concepts. A great deal of attention was paid to specific clarinet techniques, such as use of the embouchure and breath timings, but I found that some general playing techniques and articulations were particularly applicable to general performance, especially on guitar. The second lesson/performance resonated more with me because of the greater attention towards general performance techniques, as well as the fact that I simply found the piece more enjoyable in terms of style. The improvement was noticeable, and it was interesting to experience improvements in the performance in real-time, as the piece was refined and enhanced. One main difference is breaks for breathing are not necessary on guitar, making it harder to judge when space in the piece best fits, whereas this is somewhat forced on wind instruments. While specific techniques apply to clarinet in terms of breathing and posture, guitar (especially contemporary) is very relaxed, with possibly the most famous guitarist in history, Jimi Hendrix, being famous for playing with his teeth! Again, the relaxed nature and freedom of the instrument makes it easy to get carried away in playing long notes and not allowing any space between notes. One way I can apply this focus on phrasing is to consciously think of myself as a singer, in that I take "breaths" in between phrases of my guitar solos, making each passage more emphasised, and the overall flow feel more natural.
