Clara Barton was the president of the red cross organization in 1904. Barton has dedicated herself to this organization. She nursed soldiers that had been wounded from the battle. According to barton she feels “ I may be compelled to face danger, But never fear it and while our soldiers can stand and fight, I can stand and feed and nurse them ”. She was the president of red cross and no one was going to stop her from helping her people. Clara Barton was important to american history because she created the Red Cross Aid.
Clara Barton made many accomplishments. One being she created the Red Cross society. She was the first president of this society. The red cross society is an aid that comes and is ready when there are disasters. They are there to treat and help people that are in need of assistance. The first time was when I was 4. They couldn't really do anything for us because of how bad the fire was. We moved to another house and a couple years later we moved back on to our land that we still owned when the house fire happen. We got a moble home and placed it on the land and we added onto the house to make a house so it was a house then. This past year in 2015 of the summer on June 2nd, it was a school day and it was 3 days before school ended. I was pulled out of class and I saw all of my sisters and my mom. We were walking out of the school and my mom told us what happen and I fell to the grown because all i could think was we are just gonna move again. As soon as I got home, a man was on our front porch and he was from Red Cross. He told me that everything was going to be okay and that they were gonna help us get back on our feet. With their help in a month we were back on our feet and we rebuilt our house and now we are doing just fine because we had Red

Clara's father, Captain Stephen Barton (1774-1862), was a successful businessman, captain of the local army and a government official in Oxford, Massachusetts. Through his memorable stories of the Indian War in Ohio and Michigan, he taught her the importance of keeping an army equipped with arms, food, clothing and medical supplies. Clara's mother, Sarah Stone Barton (1783-1851), was a liberated woman who was known for her unstable temper. Growing up, Clara stayed close to her sister Sarah Barton Vassall (1811-1874) who was also a school teacher. One of Clara’s brothers, Captain David Barton (1808-1888) served as an Assistant Quartermaster for the Union army during the Civil War. He taught Clara to ride horses, and he became Clara's first patient after suffering a severe injury in a farm accident at a young age. Her oldest brother, Stephen Barton (1806-1865), was a businessman in Oxford and Bartonsville, North Carolina. Stephen taught Clara math while she was yet a little girl. Clara’s oldest sister Dorothea (Dolly) Barton (1804-1846) was remembered as a bright young woman who desired to continue her own education.

Later after the battle of Cedar Mountain, Barton arrived. She arrived at the battlefield with a wagon full of supplies for the soldiers. The surgeons helping the soldiers were surprised and declared “she was an angel sent to them”.

The first carnage of the war made it possible for nursing to become a professional occupation. The women who proved themselves as capable volunteers established nursing as an acceptable field of employment for women after the war. The contributions of the thousands of female nurses helped to alter the image of the professional nurse and changed American nursing from a male-dominated to a largely female profession (Woodworth).
