The Civil War was an absolute blood bath by the battles end, thousands would lie dead. The wilderness was typical of Civil War battles in that it was indecisive despite its brutality, The technological advancements since the Mexican –American War in weapons technology were significantly responsible for the indecisive and violent nature of Civil War battles.
Civil War battles were indecisive. Battles were frequent, much more frequent than past wars. By comparison the famous wars of the past like the Napoleonic wars had only had a handle full of battles, and almost all of them were indecisive. When it says indecisive as opposed to decisive, it means that they are constantly unsure of themselves and the actions that they are trying to take in deciding what they want, and when they want to do it. Winners and loser were less common and even victory would not alter the course of the war.
Weapons and technology has made weapons far more lethal giving the advantage to the defender. Some examples of battles that were mostly defensive and where the attacker suffered high casualties were the following: the battle of Tarawa, the battle of Singapore, and the battle of Fallujah. The battle of Tarawa suffered 2,000 to 5,000 casualties, The Battle of Singapore suffered 2,000 casualties, and the Battle of Tarawa suffered 3,000 casualties. The war in Virginia frequently evolved into trench warfare. These factors were magnified by the much larger troops that the armies had and compare army sizes in the Civil War with army sizes with the Mexican-American War.

Early that summer, the Richmond army started producing rifles on the Springfield pattern. Though that army in Richmond eventually sent hundreds and thousands of arms to the confederate army, these would be primarily fire arms that would retrieve from battle arms and would be repaired. The Richmond army was never able to produce more than 1,500 rifles in a single month. The confederacy would need to find arms elsewhere.
