The Civil War The American Civil War was a major war fought from 1861 to 1865. This war was caused by an extensive controversy of the 1800’s, slavery. This war officially began in 1861, when the Confederate forces made their attack on Fort Sumter in South Carolina soon after our President Lincoln was inaugurated. The nationalists defied secessionists of the Confederate States, from whom which advocated for states' rights to expand slavery. Among the thirty-four U.S. states in February of 1861, seven out of those thirty-four states personally declared their secession from the U.S. The Confederacy was never clearly seen by the United States government, or by any foreign countries. Unfortunately, the Southern states saw this as a violation of their own rights. The Pro-Union candidates had an 82% majority of votes casted. Lincoln's votes came from most of the north, and John Bell's votes were based in Tennessee, Virginia, and Kentucky. As voting was over, and as the results came in, Lincoln became the Nation’s new president, and did not agree with slavery, slavery became a central source of tension in the 1850s. Lincoln was our very first Republican candidate to win the presidency. The Republican Party tried to prevent the spread of slavery which made the Southern leaders feel that disunion was their only option. The South started to fear that the loss of representation would ruin their ability to advertise pro-slavery acts and policies, and that a lack of slave-labor would ruin businesses that required labor regarding, for instance, plantations for sugar and …show more content…

After the first offer was declined, Republicans tried to compromised with an alternative, which stated to leave slavery where it already was, but the South rejected Lincoln’s offer, and claimed it as incompetent. When the Civil War first started, the Confederacy met with the Union’s Navy for a discussion, unfortunately this only led to restricting the Union. By the end of 1864, all of the violence that has been created damaged the nationwide anti-war movement, which led to the debate on whether or not Lincoln will stay for another term in his presidency. When I think of slavery I have a very dark image in my head. Slavery inherently is inhumane and morally apprehensible. For example, they would whip their slaves for doing a task incorrectly. I think the Civil war could have been avoided if the South agreed to having, but not spreading slavery, but that it needed to have been ended somehow. People such as Ron Paul have even claimed that the Civil War could have been avoided through peacefully working through negotiations between the North and the South, although this is purely speculation.
