We are always on the lookout for the next big thing in medicine and I believe we may have found a new superstar in the world of asthma maintenance medication in Cinqair. When we look at medications we are wanting to know mechanisms of action, indications, cautions, contraindications, drug interactions, adverse effects, routes of administration, and dosages. In this paper, we are going to discuss these points as well as how it will help us in the medical setting.
Just a quick overview of what Cinqair does for patients Cinqair (reslizumab) is an interleukin-5 antagonist monoclonal antibody (IgG4 kappa). In the use of Cinqair hypersensitivity to drug/class/components, status asthmaticus, acute asthma, acute bronchospasm, caution in long term corticosteroid usage. I would need to make sure that the patient do not have any drug interactions with this medication. People take so many different medications these days to control so many different things. There are no drug interactions known currently. This is a very new medication so that doesn’t mean that there will not be drug interactions that come to the light as usage becomes more popular. We need to advise our patients that there are possible side effects to taking this medication. Cinqair can cause serious side effects including breathing problems paleness, flushing, skin rash (hives)itching, swelling of your face, lips, mouth, or tongue, symptoms of low blood pressure (fainting, dizziness, light headedness, confusion, fast heart beat) nausea or abdominal discomfort. The most common side effects in clinical trials for Cinqair included anaphylaxis, cancer, and muscle pain (P. N. 2013, June 03). Drugs can have what is known as black box warning labels and Cinqair is one that does care this label. Black box warning anaphylaxis occurred in 0.3% of patients in placebo-controlled studies. The dosage typically given is 3 mg/kg IV q4wk infused over 20-50 minutes. (Elliott, W., & Chan, J. (2016). Patient teaching for Cinqair is critical we need to inform patients that hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, have occurred with administration of Cinqair. Educate patients on the signs and symptoms of hypersensitivity reactions and anaphylaxis (e.g., skin or mucosal involvement, airway compromise, reduced blood pressure). Instruct patients to contact their healthcare professional immediately if they experience symptoms of an allergic reaction after they have received their infusion. This medication does not treat acute asthma symptoms or acute exacerbations. They need to seek medical advice if their asthma remains uncontrolled or gets worse after beginning treatment with Cinqair as indicated in the above information. Patients treated with this medication are at risk of malignancies related to the use of this medication. Patients shouldn’t stop systemic or inhaled corticosteroids unless physician directed.
