As a director Buton has many advantages as compared to an author to show mood and tone. In his previous movies such as “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Edward Scissorhands” Burton used multiple techniques to emphasize the cheerful and sinister mood and tones of the movies. Although Burton uses multiple techniques he displays a pattern in his work, he likes to portray darker moods and tones because of his childhood experiences. He especially likes to use lighting, camera angles and sound to depict these cinematic techniques. First of all sound plays a big part in creating the mood and tone in darker movies. The dreary sounds help to capture the mood of each scene. During the opening of the movie “Edward Scissorhands” you hear creepy music in the background. Bright lighting can be used to display happiness, however Burton chooses to display the more sinister side of things by using low key lighting. In the movie “Edward Scissorhands” Burton uses a great contrast of different lighting. In the town that Peg lives in there is bright lighting to emphasize the existence of an almost utopia. On top of that the town looks perfect. But what you don’t see is that the women of the town gossip and are very rude. On the contrast Edward’s mansion is very dark and frightening and Edward himself is not pleasant to look at. In reality Edward is a very gentle and kind. His lawn is also surrounded by beautiful bush sculptures of animals. Burton also shows this unique technique in the movie “Charlie and the Chocolate factory”. Charlie's house is isolated and darks looking like Edwards mansion. Only greedy grouchy people could live there, but no Sweet Charlie lives there with his mom, dad, and grandparents. Each one of them are caring supportive people who have done their best working through hard times. The chocolate factory also looks this way but is colorful and amazing
