Character Admiration in Asian Literature: A Comparative Study

The Asian literature is quite different in terms of character admiration than that of previous reviewed section. It is apparent that the characters did not suffer near as much quite as much tragedy as that of other cultures, but yet still generate thair own respect in terms of admiration. While still having to rise above the rest ,these characters seem to have to deal with less in the first place. Two prime examples of this are Policeman 663 in ChungKing Express and Rat in the book A Wild Sheep Chase.

It is a rather odd work in this sense. One character is referred to as the rat. Rat is the one of the most, if not the mot, honorable and admirable characters in the novel. There are several reasons for this but the main character is in advertising. He is not named but this is his job nonetheless. There is a guy called the boss and he is in search of this seemingly magical sheep. The boss has a picture of this sheep with a star on it and he sees it in the narrators advertisement. He gives Rat this picture and tells him to go find this sheep. This is where the title of the novel begins to become apparent. A wild sheep chase is a play on the words of a wild goose chase. What this tends to mean is that a person is sent on a mission to find something they will never be able to obtain. However, Rat recognizes the picture that the boss provides for him. He sees that it is from his parents home town. He travels there in search of this long lost sheep and eventually finds it. He realizes that this is an evil sheep and it posses evil powers. The sheep has the ability to become a part of the person that it inhabits. Rat allows for this sheep to haunt him and the sheep becomes a part of Rat himself. Rat knows the evil powers that this sheep possess. With this knowledge Rat decides to take his own life. On page 330 the narrator says to Rat, “ 'You 're already dead, aren 't you? ' ... 'That 's right, ' said the Rat finally. 'I 'm dead '” (Murakami 330).If the sheep is inside of him and he kill himself the sheep will be contained inside his dead body. Rat sacrifices himself for the greater good and this is what makes him such an admirable character. He pays the ultimate price of his life and this is what the reader loves about
