Some explorers were not looking for land to claim, but faster routes. Columbus went exploring trying to find a faster way to Asia/India for spice trading. The reason for this was because his country was receiving Asian Spices from Muslims(Document 3). In order to get the spices from the Muslims, high prices had to be paid since it was exchanged from person to person. Columbus went sailing and found an area that had inhabitants who looked like people he has never seen before which he assumed were Indians. Columbus saw they had foods he never had before and he started trading with them. Conquistadors came over to get all the gold they possibly could. The Spanish were cruel and took advantage of the Native Americans who were living there. Not only did the Spanish want the gold but they also wanted the land. The Native Americans were enslaved by the Spaniards and were forced to mine for gold. The Spaniards gave the Natives extremely high gold quotas to meet. Most were unable to do so and because of that they were punished. Natives would have both of their hands cut off(Document 1). The other reason was so that the Spaniards wouldn’t have a problem with resistance from them. The Native Americans were majorly taken advantage of for gold. The other reason for exploration was everyone wanted more land to expand their power. Both England and France got into multiple confrontations over land. With at least only 4 wars, England and France spent at least 32 years at war with each other (Document 7). Of those wars Britain mostly had the best outcomes of them. The main timing and reason was colonization. As the European settlers began to colonize the Americas, they saw that they could use the Natives and treat them however they wanted because it was free or low-costly labor. The ill treatment of these people caused many to rebel and revolt against the colonists, or in many circumstances, it caused the Native populations to decline dramatically in numbers. This decimation of the Native American populations left small amounts of people to care for the land, shaping the United States’ environment for future generations. This is part of the reason why many Natives felt resentment to the colonists both in the present time and the future. The order that many of the events happened also affected the issues that first caused the colonization of the Americas.
In August of the year 1680, around present day New Mexico, the Pueblo Indians had begun an uprising against Spanish colonists which resulted in the death of over 400 Spanish. The remaining 2,000 settlers were driven out of the area. The reason for this war was due to the constant oppression and violent treatment of Pueblo by Spanish colonists. For nearly 100 years, starting in 1540, the Pueblo Indians were subjected to successive waves of soldiers, missionaries, and settlers. There was much conflict between the Pueblo and the Spanish due to differences in religion and culture. The most important cause of the Pueblo Revolt was because the Spanish attempted to destroy their religion, banning traditional dances and religious icons. Many people might make the argument that colonization was a bad idea to the new world. But I disagree I think it was worth the cost to colonize the new world. When Columbus was writing a letter back to the queen and king he was describing a dream land and why they should conquer the land. If he didn’t think that they should conquer it then why would he be writing back to the king and queen?
Native Americans were abused by Spanish officials when the Spanish invaded their lands. In an attempt to control the attacks of the Native Americans, they enlisted fear into the minds of the Indians.
When the Europeans explored the Americas, they were introduced to new plants, foods, and animals, as well as riches and land. Foods such as corn, white and sweet potatoes, beans, tomatoes, cacao, fruits, peppers, peanuts, sugar cane, and tobacco were many of the new foods enjoyed by Europeans. Some animals such as wild turkeys, llamas, and alpacas, were brought back to Europe. Native American Indians traded furs with the Europeans, which were luxury items throughout Europe. The discovery of lands rich in gold, silver, and other treasures prompted the conquistadors to launch expeditions to the Americas, while reports of newly discovered lands abundant in resources, lured many other Europeans to the Americas in search of a new and better life.
Many people think of Christopher Columbus as a great man or a hero. I think of him as a villain. My reason behind that is because he enslaved and mutilated Native Americans on their own land. There is a lot of discussion about the population of those who lived in the Americas before Christopher Columbus had “discovered” it. In the document, one of the lowest estimates of the number of inhabitants in the Americas before Columbus was as low as 500,000. This estimate was created by someone who did not believe the inhabitants were capable of such thing, just because someone from a more "western" developed country had not been there. It is astonishing because although the inhabitants may not have been technology advanced, they were able to create a living area for a space of people up to about 70 million, one of the highest estimates of the population. He's also known as the man who discovered America. Columbus was born somewhere around 1451 and his hometown is Genoa that's in Italy. His father was Domenico Columbus and his mother was Susanna Fontanarossa, he was the son of wool merchants. Columbus also had three younger brothers, Bartholomew Columbus, Giovanni Pellegrino Columbus, and lastly Giacomo Columbus, he also had a sister named Bianchinetta Columbus. Native Americans lived on the land that is now called America, but when white settlers started to take over the land, many lives of Native Americans were lost. Today, many people believe that the things that have been done and are being done right now, is an honor or an insult to the Natives. The choices that were made and being made were an insult to the Native Americans that live and used to live on this land, by being insulted by land policies, boardings schools and modern issues, all in which contain mistreatment of the Natives. The discovery of America was the best thing to happen to mankind during the year of 1492. Let’s face it, the political landscape has changed over the past centuries in an astronomical way. How we view the world today, may have not been how they viewed the world in the late 1400s. The greatest question to ask is if history was wrong in the past. Perhaps the founding fathers would have surrendered to the British Empire; if we lived in a world of that, would we consider history on our side today? What if Nazi Germany had won World War II and Adolf Hitler’s ideology was placed worldwide, would we agree with it today?
