A true beauty of humanity is that as a collective there can be so many similarities and so many differences. This observation can be seen with the various states, sports and even the different pigments of the skin, as well as religion. Christianity and Islam are both very historically rich religions, both originated in what is now known as the Middle East. To many people these religions are as different as day and night, but after further research these religions are very similar. Whereas Islam is the fastest growing religion with 152 million growth over 5 years and has 1.8 Billion followers. These two religions are global religions, meaning that they contain followers in every corner of the globe. Islam has a majority not only in the Middle Eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iran, but Indonesia, Northern and Parts of Central Africa. This spread was not per say through conquest as most people previously thought, but through trade and culture, such as pioneering of Algebra, architecture and infrastructure. This spread often starts in enclaves then expands outwards, a major enclave of Muslims in the U.S.A. is in Minnesota, where my friend Faysal is from. This spread is in part due to the fact that the religion has the history of the Holy Land and even their pilgrimage to Mecca called a “hajj (Gwynne 374)”, this pilgrimage is seen as an act of devotion, especially to well which is said to have healing properties (375). This pilgrimage provides a grounding and sort of focal point of the faith. The terror attacks by extremists have diminished and tainted many peoples view of Islam and how people assume it is inherently a violent religion that is seeking to infiltrate and destroy anyone whom does not submit or conform. Whereas Christianity is being seen as either outdated with abortion issues or clashes with some groups in the LGBT, there is still conflict though in many cases not a severe. Each religion experiences it differently over time, and are often based on unique times and leaders at that time, such as Pope’s being criticized or even praised for reform or lack of.
