A community is defined by Merriam-Webster as, “A unified body of individuals.” The question is, what sets a Christian community apart? Christian community is described throughout 1 John as community of believers who have decided to live walking alongside each other, loving each other, and speaking truth into each other's lives for the sake of the Kingdom. Christian community, if it is built upon 1 John ideals, is a great gift designed and given by God to believers. This foundation of the Christian community is God’s sacrificial love that flows from the hearts of all that walk with Him. Jesus is the light of the Christian community. 1 John 3:11 says, ”For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.” We were created, as people, to live in community together and if one does not have love for fellow Christians then they have no community to support them in their walk. 1 John 4:7-8 says “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” Christ love and his ultimate sacrifice should overflow our hearts and Christians are called to spread this love to the world around us and it is apparent in every aspect of life. Our love is our testimony and should thrive as we walk together as a Christian community. 1 John 2:9-10 says,”Whoever says he is in the light and hates his brother is still in darkness. Whoever loves his brother abides in the light, and in him there is no cause for stumbling.” We should not hate our brothers and sisters in Christ but love them no matter what in light of knowing God’s unconditional love for us. Thomas Merton in his 1 John excerpts says, “We are obliged to love one another. We are not strictly bound to “like” one another. Love governs the will: “liking” is a matter of sense and sensibility. Nevertheless, if we really love others it will not” We do not have to like everything about every fellow beliver in the community but rather love them as God loves us, despite our actions in a forgiving
