McCandless set the right amount of goals for himself. Even if he wasn’t prepared he still did many things in his bucket list. “McCandless was thrilled to be on his way north, and he was relieved as well, relieved that he had again evicted the impending threat of human intimacy, of friendship, and all the messy emotional baggage that comes with it.” Pg.142 McCandless wasn’t mentally crazy, but he was crazy at heart. He was bright, social, adventurous, and admiring. McCandless had the world on his shoulders he took that first step into freedom. “Intended to be free to wallow in unfiltered experience. To symbolize the complete severance from his previous life, he even adopted a new name. No longer would he answer to Chris.” Pg. 43 He wanted to reinvent himself, and his name.
