In the tale, The Knight’s Tale, Chaucer made sure not to deviate away from what he saw during his time because some qualities emerged as prominent figures. The Knight’s Tale made sure to exemplify the idea of courtly love and what it truly means to be a knight who follows the code of chivalry. Some of the qualities of being chivalrous is being generous, honest, courageous, and supporting the notion of justice, which the readers can see that Chaucer understood the significance of the noble behavior and how that affected people at that time. Religion and the chivalric code was a great concept to follow, but disorder was not a terrible idea to experience because disorder allows a nation to know that there are areas to improve in. When Palamon and Emily were in distraught about Arcite’s death, Theseus reminded them both that they needed to move forward. He explained to both of them that people die and if they stay in their constant state of mind they will never stop regretting what happened. Theseus proposed to Emily and Palamon to get married, which they obeyed, and over the years, they had a happy and prosperous marriage. Thompson highlighted how what Theseus was stating and the theme of the tale was hinting at is what needed to occur. Thompson explained “how the disordering force of love” eventually led to the friends realizing the importance of “family, friendship and chivalry.” At first, Palamon and Arcite were both “quarreling beast[s]”(Thompson) that did not take time to think out the situation before acting. Sometimes, as demonstrated in the tale, love makes some people act in ways they would not normally act because people tend to act instead of processing everything that is occurring. Chaucer made sure to include the conflict in the tale almost to say that even in a civilized place people still face issues that cause them to deviate from the norm. As the readers can tell, the norm was respecting others and being generous and courageous, but as with any great story, people have issues that they do not realize at first until it is too late to fix what is happening. Gratefully, Theseus was able to offer the wise advice to Palamon to let him know that it was too late to fix what occurred so all he could do is move
