The subject of this paper has been difficult to decide upon until a compelling, entertaining and moving story came to light. Friday, November 15, 2013, the entire city of San Francisco pulled together to give a child his wish, according to the Associated Press in many national news reporting agencies. The Make-A-Wish Foundation, is a “charitable organization founded in the United States that grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy”, (Wikipedia, 2013). This time the Foundation out did itself by fulfilling the wish of 5-year-old, Miles Scott, by turning the city of San Francisco, CA into Gotham City for the better part of a day to let Leukemia survivor Miles become “Batkid”!, (USA Today, 2013).
This was no ordinary “playing dress up” for the young leukemia survivor. This “make believe” fantasy, from the super hero lover 5-year-old, reached from the President of the United States, Barak Obama all the down to the actors hired to play the loathsome Riddler and Joker. According to the press, the entire city took part to make Miles’ wish be not only fulfilling but also phenomenal.
Batkid was first called to action by the Police Chief Greg Suhr, and then went on to fight crime with an adult Batman impersonator by rescuing a damsel in distress from the cable car tracks and defusing a bomb. The United States Attorney General, Melinda Haag, then notified Batkid that there was an “indictment” charging the Riddler and the Penguin with conspiracy and she needed Batkid’s help to bring them to justice. Miles went on to a bank robbery in progress where he captured the Riddler. The mini superhero then needed to save the San Francisco Giants mascot, “Lou Seal” fro...

This kind of “make believe” also did something else; the wish brought together many different people which restores faith in humanity for many people.

In an attempt to show our gratitude to him, let us make this day an memorial that will always stand in his honor. Teach your children about the Batman and the sacrifices he made for each and every one of us. Tell your children that without this man, the city would not be like it is today, chances are, none of us would be alive if it hadn't been for Batman. Tell your children not to honor the Batman with kind words, though words may be nice, actions say what words cannot. Tell your children to act like Batman, to always put others before themselves, to sacrifice for those in need. Let us send this message out of just Gotham, let us share our message with every one in attempts that we can bring the world together and fight back against the evil that walks among us. Let us sacrifice the way Batman always did for
The Children’s Miracle Network is a non-profit organization that provides charitable funds to 170 children’s hospitals in the United States and Canada. ‘Heck Superhero’, written by Martine Leavitt, is the melancholy tale of Heck, a thirteen year old self-proclaimed superhero. When his mother is evicted from their home and leaves without a trace, Heck finds himself abandoned and alone on the streets. Desperate to find his mother, he offers up ‘good deeds’ in hopes of finding her. But instead he finds that he’s not just losing mother, he’s also losing himself. To aid in my comprehension of this book, I used a variety of reading strategies from visualizing to inferencing to further my understanding of ‘Heck Superhero’.

Toddlers’ attention are piqued by bedazzling visual stimuli. R.D. Base has securely created ‘the hook’ through Toni as a superhero along with Debbie Hefke’s colourful illustrations. The book’s cover page pretty much says it all – Toni is a superhero but an ordinary one; one that children can relate to. The first page introduces the reader to Toni without he’s superhero outfit, simply, 'This is Toni'. We know that 'Toni is a Superhero', but he is also a down-to-earth kinda guy. The reader gets to find out what he does everyday.

With an impressive repertoire of movies, books, TV shows, comics, and exclusive memorabilia; the Batman has gained world recognized fame and has played an iconic role for the DC universe. Unlike his other crime fighting colleagues such as Superman or the Flash, Batman the alter ego of billionaire Bruce Wayne does not possess any superhuman powers but instead relies on what DC refers to as his “physical prowess” and “technical ingenuity” (Origins). Perhaps one can consider the vast wealth of Mr. Wayne his true power but in a conjured world packed with villains and other heroes Batman relies perhaps the most important tool a hero can have, his mind. Managing two identities in secrecy Bruce Wayne shows in a sense the power each average individual

Medical Terminology is considered as the current language of medicine. When learning this matter, individual will discover that most medical words are separated into 3 groups that are words created from term parts, terms that aren’t made from word portions, and terms that are considered eponyms. The field of clinical medicine, bioinformatics, and research employ an endless list of terms, abbreviations, and codes. To further complicate communication, many of these terms, abbreviations, and codes can vary dramatically due to geography or educational background. This is where the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) comes into the picture. The UMLS unites nomenclatures such as ICD-9, ICD-10, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, SNOMED, LONIC, and other medical vocabularies into one resource.

When one hears the word “cancer”, thoughts about how their previous life is about to change cloud the mind, but when one hears the word cancer for their child, it is a whole different outlook; the affects of childhood cancer are not only taken on by the patients, but also by their families; the affects can range from emotionally to physically, socially to financially, and even educationally. “Childhood cancer is considered rare, especially compared with adults. Still it’s the leading cause of death in children pre-adolescent, school-aged children” (Report: Childhood Cancer Rates Continue to Rise, but Treatment Helps Drive Down Deaths). Around 12,000 children in the United States are diagnosed with cancer every year and around one in five children that are diagnosed with cancer will die.
Reality and Fantasy are often thought as two worlds which when collided create incredible stories of wonder and mystery. Why no other genre of literature is more popular than that of fantasy right now. Seventeen of the top twenty highest grossing movies in the Unites States and Canada last year were fantasies and of those the top six were based on books or comics (MPAA, 21). Fantasy allows for the unexplained to occur and creates a world separate to that of reality. As such fantasy stories often allow the audience to escape from reality and travel to places where their problems do not matter. Fantasy is used in children’s stories as it allows the author to both avoid the mundane and drab world and deal with complicated issues under a veil which children will understand. This essay will look at the both the realms fantasy and reality in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, as well as the first thirteen issues of Superman. The struggles that the protagonists must face and how the separation from reality allows for children to absorb the complex moralities of right and wrong; the message of basic human virtues.
