Introduction The case study is about a child s personal, social and emotional development .I am going to lay them out in three areas all linked together. This assignment will focus on one child in my setting. Kiddies den is a Montessori school and crèche in county Cavan. It operates Monday to Friday 8 to 6, and caters for up to 40 children on a daily basis. I`m the manager and owner of kiddies den .I sought approval from the child`s parent to do the case study, by writing a letter in which I will get the mother to sign and put into my appendix. I will ask the child for permission. I will changed the child`s name to false initials for legal and confidential reasons. I will observe the child in the mornings in the Montessori school in different areas for 10 to 20 minutes .I will do two observations on all three areas personal, social, and emotional. I choose this child because of the anxiety he sometimes shows coming into crèche in the morning, also his sudden bursts of crying. I will share all observations with the parents of the child. RL is three and a half years old and lives with his mother and father in a two story house in the countryside. His father is a carpenter and work`s in Dublin traveling up and down daily, while his mother stays at home with their new baby who is 6 months old. RL started in the crèche when he was one year old. Children can develop strategies to deal with new stressful situations once given the freedom to express their feeling e.g. Sad, happy, excited, frustrated etc. , this is evident from my observations of RL because of the arrival of Rl `s new baby he feels less special to his mother where he says she`s going home to mind my baby brother she loves him more than me. I don’t like him (observation 7 appendix) Rl is really struggling with his emotions as clearly evident in most of the observations. It is vital for children to feel special to someone and to be well cared for their personal, social, emotional, health, and wellbeing. (SIEGEL 1999) he said that when experiencing a situation that prompts anger can arouse the sympathetic nervous system “fight of flight” Rl has showed clear evidence of this when he punched his friend and pushed him off the tractor, screaming and crying (observation 4). That`s what is sometimes called the ‘reptilian’ part of the brain (at the top of the spinal column and deep in the brain) which controls natural functions such as breathing and blinking. It is also responsible for the basic survival responses to threat of ‘Fright’ (frozen in fear), ‘Flight’ (running away) and ‘Fight’ (responding aggressively) that occur when a human feels threatened, unsafe or insecure.
