Toth states that empathy is a trait that defines humanity in Dick’s novel (66). From Dick’s point of view, each character deals with the meaning of empathy through several instances; empathy defines who is either human or artificial. "...ultimately, the empathic gift distorted the boundaries between hunter and victim, between the successful and the defeated” (Dick, 29). This quote explains what Dick attempts first to convey in his novel and then later distorts (Vint, 111). He constantly makes remarks about wanting to own a real animal that can love him in return. Furthermore, Deckard is so determined to own a real animal that he becomes selfish and lacks the trait of collectivism that along with empathy defines humanity. Due to this character, Deckard’s sense of mankind is contradicted even more. Even though Rachael is an android, she has the ability to care for other androids. Also, she sometimes cares for the humans she interacts with. Rachael shows that she cares for androids when she calls Deckard to confront him about killing the androids that escaped. She seduces him to stop him from killing the three androids that are left. She also admits that she is close friends with one of the androids for like two years (Dick, 199). After Deckard kills the remaining three androids, Rachael pushes his goat off the roof as revenge for her friends. This act shows that Rachael cared for them just like a normal human being would.
