Charles Coward: The Count of Auschwitz

Charles Coward was a World War II prisoner of war(POW). Charles used his smarts to escape and saved hundreds of Jewish lives from the concentration camp Auschwitz. He was also part of the Nuremberg Trials to bring down the Nazis. This makes Charles Coward was one of the most interesting World War II heroes due to his early life, personality, and bringing Nazis to justice. Due to Charles’ achievements, he will be remembered as a World War II hero. On the date, Jan 30, 1905, Charles Joseph Coward was born in England. Charles, when he was about 32 years old, made a daring decision to the British army. In May 1940 Charles fell into Germany’s hand at this time he was a Battery Sergeant Major. When captured he was sent to a POW camp.

When Charles was sent to the camps he tried to escape many times but was captured every time before exiting German territories. In the December of 1943, Charles was sent to was sent from Stalag in Lamsdorf to Auschwitz. Where he was assigned to labor detachment. In Auschwitz, Coward witnessed the cruel punishment of the prisoners in the Buna/Monowitz concentration camp at the I.G. construction site.
