When someone decides to belittle him and think that he will not retaliate, he surprises them with a slander. Towards the beginning of the story Marlowes assistant Anna, had set up an appointment with Mr. Jeeter. Upon his arrival, he was bothered that he had to wait which lead him to insult Marlowe saying that he was not a gentleman and Marlowe countered with “You’re not the Jeeter of tobacco road are you?” I asked him. --- “wait a minute nothing,” I said. This party said I was not a gentleman. Maybe that’s O.K. for a man in his position, whatever it is- but a man in my position doesn’t take a dirty crack from anybody. He can’t afford to unless, of course, it was not intended.”’ (257). It doesn’t matter who you are; Marlowe doesn’t take the disrespect from anybody. He also makes wisecracks that help lighten the mood. At one point Marlowe was in the elevator with a few men, and one of the men were named beef, Marlowe took it upon himself to make a crack out of it by commenting with “’ What’s the matter, Beef?” “He’s in a stew,” I said’ (278). No matter the situation Marlowe always could make jokes out of his
Characterization is the process by which the author reveal the personality of a character. Characterization can be created in two different ways: direct and indirect characterization. Direct characterization is when the author tells the readers what a character is like. Indirect characterization is based on clues from the story, the reader decides what a character is like. Indirect characterization can come from what the character says/does, what the character thinks, what others say about the character, and the character’s physical appearance.
To illustrate, in The Great Gatsby, alcohol is a social lubricant. For instance Nick Caraway says he has only drank twice. The second time was when Tom invited him to a party at his apartment in New York City, where he has his affairs with his mistress myrtle. Nick drinks to mute out the chatter and gossiping about Gatsby and describes everyone as superficial and fake. He describes the whole afternoon as “[having] a dim, hazy cast over it” (Fitzgerald 32).Although when The Great Gatsby takes place, the Eighteenth A...
Another way these characters avoid living their life is by drinking continuously, in a way to make the time pass by faster and forget. ?Haven?t you had enough? She loses count after 10 cocktails,? (pg.11) proving to the audience her own self denial, and how she wastes every day. Unfortunately, there are many, who in society today, do the same thing to get out of a situation they?re trying to hide or a difficult time they?re going through. This relates back to their affair which they?re obviously hiding and trying to get through this time in their life.
One of the symbols that the author uses in “Cathedral” is drinking which shows how humans use drinking as a form of escaping of their problems, but at the same time drinking helps the narrator to have a more open mind. In the story drinking is present many times, when the wife tried to kill herself, when the husband is waiting for her wife and the blind man, when the husband meets Robert, and when the husband, the wife and Robert eat and when they watch television. According to Caldwell Tracy “The narrator's disaffected state of being seems exacerbated by his turn to alcohol and drugs, which he uses both to provide a comfort level during Robert's visit and as a strategy to deal with his frequent nightmares.” Drinking in the story can be seen as a way of escaping reality because one knows that the husband is lonely an alcohol is a way of forgetting that. “I did the drinks, three big glasses of Scotch with a splash of water in each. Then we made ourselves comfortable and talked about Robert’s travels” (436), this quote shows how drinking in the story was the form in which the husband and Robert star socializing and ...
As advised by Shannon L. Alder “ If you want to discover the true character of a person, you have only to observe what they are passionate about ”. The true character of a person can be hidden by the way they act. A shy person could be very generous, or a comical person could be selfish. Under certain circumstances a person is forced to cease masqueradeing and reveal their true character. In The Crucible, Corey Giles’ solemn and bitter character displaced his adolescent character when his wife was arrested.
In the small parties there were many stupid decisions that came from drinking alcohol. One of them was how they stated that gatsby doesn't drink because he’d rather stay sober and make no mistake for when he sees his sweetheart. “It was so indirectly due to cody that gatsby drank so little.”(Fitzgerald 100). He later gets to see his nefarious crush and makes every gesture to make everything perfect before she presents herself. Another piece of evidence was the night before daisy was married she didn't feel emotionally well so she decided to drink an excessive amount of alcohol to mask her emotions and instead began to cry and make her herself look like a fool. “As drunk as a monkey”(Fitzgerald 76). She rarely drinks at parties but drinks excessively
Characterization is how a character is described in a story. A character can be described by appearance, physical traits, personality, their words, their motives, and many other descriptions. In this story, the author used physical and personality traits to help describe his characters more clearly in the story. Physical traits are a character's appearance. Personality traits are permanent qualities in a character. While on the island, the three men noticed something strange while on duty. A Dutch ship was just sailing toward them. However, when the crew members looked more closely, the Dutch boat was not abandoned by her crew, but was instead eaten alive by an army of human-eating sea rats! Sea rats are not like your ordinary house rat. House rats scurry into their little mouse hole as soon as they sense danger. Sea rats are strong, brave animals. The rats in the story are described by both very stimulating physical and personality traits. The physical traits of the rats are large, strong, huge, and have sharp claws and teeth. The physical features of the rats make them much stronger and powerful than the average brown rat. The personality traits of the rats are brave, vengeful, have respect to the sea and are fierce. They are also superior, intelligent, and clannish. Worse of all, these are
In the book, The Power of One, the main character Peekay has a vast amount of traits that make up his peculiar personality. Three of these personality traits are resilience, maturity, and independence, and he gets each from a different life experience or person he meets. These, combined with something he called his “camouflage,” made it possible for Peekay to get through the rough patches in his life. Peekay’s personality traits show up in a different part of his life, but they all come together to help him survive in the end.
Characterization has been established as an important part of literature as it allows authors to fully develop characters’ personalities, allowing readers to understand the characters and their actions. In the poem Judith, the author uses adjective phrases to describe Judith and Holofernes’ personalities. The diverse contrast in their nature highlights the heroic qualities in Judith, which teach the reader to have faith in God, as that is where her courage and strength stems from. Therefore, characterization can further be used as a technique to establish major themes in a work of
One of the major theoretical areas in the study of the personality is the trait perspective. It suggests that individual personalities are comprised of broad dispositions, and it identifies and measures the characteristics that they are made up of (Cherry). The trait perspective helps to identify a person’s personality type (Myers). This perspective focuses on the difference between individual personalities and the traits that shape them.
Personality is defined as the combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual's distinctive character. Our personality has a huge influence on our enduring, distinctive thoughts, emotions, and behaviors which influence how we adapt to our world. It’s how we define ourselves, and how others view you. Many psychologists have faced the challenge of trying to determine where our personality is derived from. Four main theories have been established on personality including psychodynamic, humanistic, trait, and social-cognitive. Using these theories, you can often better understand why people are the way that they are, such as Bill Cosby.
As readers we are introduced quickly to how liquor is involved in the characters lives in Plague of Doves. On page 36 as we are learning more about Evelina’s family she explains this incident involving Father Cassidy, “For one, my mother blamed the argument on liquor and banned Mooshum from drinking as best she could. For another the grip of the church on our family was weakened as Mooshum thrillingly broke away” (Erdrich 36). As we learn after this liquor has a grip on Mooshum’s life for obvious reasons regarding his past. The numb of drinking is a medicine for Mooshum.
Simple things such as rivalries or forced relationships can be the cause of the unlikely pairing of individuals allows for many different outcomes. Whether it is positive or negative, both parties are affected by this relationship. Within The King Rat, there is a prominent division between the prisoners. The prisoners either side with The King or they dread his existence. Peter Marlowe was one of the people who had a strong distaste for The King, yet the thrill of adventure brings them together. In the middle of a deal, Marlowe shows how little he cares for The Kings various businesses by bringing about a sarcastic response to his business proposition; “Well, it doesn't really have a literal translation. But, uh, roughly speaking, it means,
Lastly, during the 1920's alcohol grew popular. Although it was illegal many people still drank, bought, and/or sold it. In the novel, The Great Gatsby written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, characters drank often. For example, Daisy asked her husband, Tom, to open the whiskey so that she could make them a mint julep (Fitzgerald 42). A Mint Julep is an alcoholic beverage that consists of whiskey, mint, water, and sugar (“The Great Gatsby; Mint Julep.”). High balls, champagne and whiskey were also mentioned frequently throughout the novel. Due to the Prohibition era, a time when alcohol was deemed to be illegal, citizens hid and disguised their alcohol. They would sometimes use "slang words, such as " rot gut, panther sweat, monkey rum, tarantula juice,
In many ways Phillip Marlowe appears to have no moral code of conduct. At times he speaks with impolite, attitude filled words. Yet, Marlowe still succeeds in his detective work and manages to satisfy his clients. He places himself directly in the middle of the crime without any physical assistance from the police. He feels no need to play by anybody else's rules, especially not those of society. Marlowe’s code of conduct is abstract and unrefined; he does not play by the rules, but he is still successful.
