Characteristics of Poe’s Writing Edgar Allan Poe is known as one of the greatest American- gothic poets of the 19th century (Buranelli,1977). His poems are very dark, melancholy and make the reader feel strange when something so morbid becomes so beautiful. Burnelli does an impeccable job explaining the grotesque qualities of Poe’s work by saying that Poe’s imagination was both normal and abnormal. The mixture of these two elements heightened the reader’s sensitivity and the way they perceived the poems and short stories Poe produced (Buranelli,1977). This character is gazing into the black void that is the night and just stands there in the silence beyond him pondering what could possibly be lurking outside the comfort of his home (Dodge, 2016). He faintly calls out the name Lenore and, as if he weren’t expecting a response, is startled when he hears the name repeated back to him. As far as symbols go for this stanza, the unknown darkness of the night is representing the outside world that Poe is so far removed from. The house that the character presides in is Poe’s mind. Poe was the most comfortable when he was left alone with his thoughts. He then writes in stanza 16: “Prophet!” said I, “thing of evil!—prophet still, if bird or devil!
