The forth video is watched is “Aligning 21st Century Learning with 21st Century Learners”. It is a film about the future, the future of our children. No one knows what the future is really going to be like. Today's children will become adults who engage in a world vastly different from what we know today.
In 20th century education, children are slowly educated out of their innate curiosity and creativity. This means that most of what we taught is just a waste of time. 85% of the teachers are educating people for yesterday, 15 to16% of them are educating people for today but only few of them are looking at tomorrow, as looking at tomorrow means teachers need to be creative, use imagination, and able to predict future.
Besides the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic, 21st century learners need to learn how to think creatively, critically and collaboratively, as well as how to problem-solve on many levels. The products of 21st century learning, or the 21st century learners have to become self-modifying, self-managing, self evaluating, and self-directed. Empowered learners of all ages who actively participate in decision-making processes tend to be highly motivated and engaged. Teachers can empower students by letting them be involved in the process, by incorporating what their thoughts and interests are. They need to be invested in what's going on. During this class I have been able to explore more into the world of education and through different videos of how education has changed over time. Today, I will be discussing the video “The Bottom Line in Education 1980-Present” and how education operated during this period. I was given the opportunity to understand how schools in the United States were functioning from 1980 until how schools are functioning now. The documentary talked about different topics concerning the impact of the educational system with how it has to be changed with things such as the curriculum of what the children are learning.

By keeping the old ways of teaching, students are never prepared for jobs that actually exist. What they neglect to realize is that most problems are unpredictable. So when a student faces a challenge not taught in the classroom, they will be incapable of solving or getting out of the situation. Once the formula does not work, creativity becomes a necessity. Some even fear the mere thought of imagination, since new possibilities open up the risk of failure or not being accepted. Students hold back their curiosity once they realize that teachers are unwilling to answer their question if it differs even slightly from the curriculum. But I think in some classes, it has gotten worse. I think part of the problem might be teachers losing their passion for teaching. I may be wrong, but it seems that some teachers get the material they are supposed to teach, put it up on a PowerPoint for us to take notes, and then expect us to regurgitate it on a test. They do things like this instead of fun activities that really make us think and discover new things in our minds. Although this is just an assumption, this article really did make me think. I found that interesting because we are in the critical thinking unit and it is exactly what we are meant to do. We’re meant to think about things, analyze things, synthesize things, and then think about it all over again until we finally come to our own conclusion. I think that was the main point of Harris’s article. We discover our true feelings and knowledge when we search for them inside of our minds, and then we create something with our own unique ideas. The education of children has existed since the beginning of time as parents have taught and molded their children into the young adults they desired them to be. Going to school and getting a great education is important for a successful future in today’s world. Years ago, many children did not go to school and many young adults opted to work instead of attending college. In today’s society, gaining a high level of education is almost always mandatory for many jobs. Socrates, a famous philosopher, once said, “I cannot teach anybody anything; I can only make them think.” This quote is interesting in the fact that in modern times it is mandatory to go to school for a certain length of time to be taught in order to learn. We have teachers that share their knowledge with their students so that the generations to come can continue to grow and develop.
