Julius Caesar is mentioned throughout the book, A Long Way Gone, many times. In A Long Way Gone, Ishmael would be reading Julius Caesar or a soldier would be reciting some of the speeches in the play. In Chapter 12 of A Long Way Gone, Ishmael is called over to talk with Lieutenant Jabati. Then, Lieutenant Jabati showed Ishmael the book he was reading, which was Julius Caesar, and asked Ishmael if he had ever heard of the book. Maya’s sense of story and her passionate desire to overcome obstacles and strive for greatness and self-appreciation is what makes Maya an outlier. Living in America, Angelou believed that African American as a whole must find emotional, intellectual, and spiritual sustenance through reverting back to their “home” of Africa. According to Maya, “Home” was the best place to capture a sense of family, past, and tradition. When it comes to Maya’s works of literature, her novels seems to be more critically acclaimed then her poetry. With that being said, Angelou pursues harsh social and political issues involving African American in her poems. Some of these themes are the struggle for civil rights in America and Africa, the feminist movement, Maya’s relationship with her son, and her awareness of the difficulties of living in America's struggling classes. Nevertheless, in all of Maya’s works of literature she is able to “harness the power of the word” through an extraordinary understanding of the language and events she uses and went through. The first wave was the death of all technology, the second a catastrophic earthquake, the third an incurable deadly disease, and the fourth was the aliens disguised as humans. The three main characters; Cassie, Evan, and Ben each tell their own story of survival and team up to survive the fifth wave, which turned out to be the aliens tricking the humans into killing each other until no humans were left. They all survive the 5th wave, Cassie saves her brother, and they make an escape together.

Soon thought of as their real mother, "Momma" raised her grandchildren with the strict Southern principles such as, "wash your feet before you go to bed; always pray to the savior and you shall be forgiven; chores and school come before play; and help those in need and you shall be helped yourself." Bearing those basic principles, Maya and Bailey grew older and wiser in Stamps, each year watching the Negro cotton-pickers come and go with the burdens and homage comparable to no white person in the county.

He was a thief and was killed by an old widow, named Rebecca, who was terrified and fired gun shots when she heard someone in the front of her house. She accepts the fact that he was a thief because it pains her less than when he was a boxer. The mother from the other story, “The Stolen Party” is also confronted by a difficult situation. Rosaura’s mother was concerned that her daughter would be used/treated as a maid, instead of being treated like every other guest. Her daughter is separated from the rest of the people at the party because she is not as wealthy and she is only the maid’s daughter. Rosaura being an ignorant child, refused to believe this at the beginning of the story and throughout the party. She finally comes to the realization that she cannot break through class stereotypes. “In her hand appeared two bills. You really and truly earned this, she said handing them over. In this new world there are different rules and expectations while she still has to respect and follow her family's traditions and rules.
