The more we alter a story, the more we begin to lose sight of what 's important. In Fahrenheit 451, the original story is literally lost forever. With the mass destruction of books in their society, many citizens are failing to learn the importance of books, and what lessons they can teach us. To write something down is a way to remember it, but with no reliable source with the advances in technology, history can become distorted. There are many cases in Fahrenheit 451 where history has been distorted. While not in a society where the general idealism not to think, but obey. The majority of the citizens in Fahrenheit 451 have little to no idea of their true past. This has been showed multiple times by Bradbury. Even famous figures, some that have been extremely influential in the formation of our society, have been reduced to figures that only support the government 's ideals. For example, “Established, 1790, to burn English-influential books in the Colonies. First Fireman: Benjamin Franklin” (34). Benjamin Franklin has been transformed from an author and writer of many great documents, to a person who burns the very things he wrote. While some of the altered history may have an air of truth. Colonists may have burned books at one point, but only in protest of British policies and teachings, but they had never burned books to need a profession for it; especially one that Benjamin Franklin would not support. Even the history of the firemen has been manipulated. Many of the citizens did not know the past of the firemen. As there “were no longer need of firemen for the old purposes. They were given a new job, as custodians of our piece of mind” (58). Many citizens were not aware of any previous profession of fireman, and that is just one distorted image in their
