Should Celebrities be Role Models With celebrities all over the media, it is expected that some are idolized by their fans, especially the youths. There nothing wrong with people making celebrities their role models. Celebrity role models can be a positive influence by changing people’s lives and way of thinking for the better. On the other hand, when impressionable kids and teens see their celebrity role models do something that is not morally sound, they will come to think that it is acceptable making it more likely for them to do it. In fact, they are far from it. They make mistakes and learn from them like everybody else. Take the endless accounts of domestic violence from athletes for example. In the article “Why athletes should never be role models for kids,” Ian Mendes claims, “...we have seen a number of NFL stars become entangled in controversies involving domestic abuse. First, there was the video release of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice knocking his fiancée unconscious in an elevator. Then, there was the indictment of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson on charges of child abuse and neglect—where he allegedly beat his four-year-old son with a tree branch as a form of discipline.” Knowing this, kids that idolize these athletes will think that it is ok for them to harm their friends and family because when they look up to someone, that person can do no wrong. Athletes, among other public figures, can and should be seen as a role models, but only for their accomplishments in the field in which they work. Singers should be role modeled only for their singing, dancers should only be role modeled for their dancing, and so on and so forth. Celebrities are going to be idolized whether they should or should not, but when they are, they can do no wrong to the fans that look up to them. According to the article “The Effects of Celebrity Role Models on Kids and Teens” by Eliza Martinez,“Many celebrities do not make a secret of alcohol or drug abuse and the glamorization of dying due to an overdose in the media might make your child feel that using these substances is acceptable.” The fans see the celebrities’ work and not the person themself. This is the main reason celebrities make such terrible role models. The fans will idolize them, but they don’t know what the celebrity is like on a personal level. They don’t know the opinion of the celebrity on certain issues. If they did and they agreed with the celebrity, then there is a whole other reason to look up to this person. If a fan disagreed, then they could still like their work and just agree to disagree, but it will never be like that. It is no one’s fault, but that is the main reason celebrities aren’t good role models. That is why parents, siblings, friends, other family, and even fictional characters work as role models. The people that look up to them know their role model personally and therefore know whether or not they agree with the role model’s
