Should Celebrities be Role Models With celebrities all over the media, it is expected that some are idolized by their fans, especially the youths. There nothing wrong with people making celebrities their role models. Celebrity role models can be a positive influence by changing people’s lives and way of thinking for the better. On the other hand, when impressionable kids and teens see their celebrity role models do something that is not morally sound, they will come to think that it is acceptable making it more likely for them to do it. In fact, they are far from it. They make mistakes and learn from them like everybody else. Take the endless accounts of domestic violence from athletes for example. In the article “Why athletes should never be role models for kids,” Ian Mendes claims, “...we have seen a number of NFL stars become entangled in controversies involving domestic abuse. First, there was the video release of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice knocking his fiancée unconscious in an elevator. Then, there was the indictment of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson on charges of child abuse and neglect—where he allegedly beat his four-year-old son with a tree branch as a form of discipline.” Knowing this, kids that idolize these athletes will think that it is ok for them to harm their friends and family because when they look up to someone, that person can do no wrong. Athletes, among other public figures, can and should be seen as a role models, but only for their accomplishments in the field in which they work. Singers should be role modeled only for their singing, dancers should only be role modeled for their dancing, and so on and so forth. Celebrities are going to be idolized whether they should or should not, but when they are, they can do no wrong to the fans that look up to them. According to the article “The Effects of Celebrity Role Models on Kids and Teens” by Eliza Martinez,“Many celebrities do not make a secret of alcohol or drug abuse and the glamorization of dying due to an overdose in the media might make your child feel that using these substances is acceptable.” The fans see the celebrities’ work and not the person themself. This is the main reason celebrities make such terrible role models. The fans will idolize them, but they don’t know what the celebrity is like on a personal level. They don’t know the opinion of the celebrity on certain issues. If they did and they agreed with the celebrity, then there is a whole other reason to look up to this person. If a fan disagreed, then they could still like their work and just agree to disagree, but it will never be like that. It is no one’s fault, but that is the main reason celebrities aren’t good role models. That is why parents, siblings, friends, other family, and even fictional characters work as role models. The people that look up to them know their role model personally and therefore know whether or not they agree with the role model’s
After observing and researching all the sources portraying celebrities I have came into a conclusion that todays society it seems like all we want is to be accepted and we tend to look at other people and judge. Its not right, we all are different and thats what makes the world go round. It would be a pretty boring world if we were all the same. Celebrities deal with this everyday, I think the paparazzi know more about some celebrities lives than they actually do. They judge them for who they are and what they do, it is not right nor fair.
Why is that all blogs or media sites only pay attention to the bad behavior? We see videos of famous people getting drunk, doing drugs, and even being disrespectful. Eventually, we see this domino effect on young girls, they start being rebellious, start to talk back to their parents even go to parties and drink. Nowadays, celebrities are seen as role models to these kids. What kind of example are these celebrities providing to teenagers when they can barely control their life. Role models are supposed to be someone you admire, someone you look up to and try and follow their examples. Not someone who lives a fake life and you barely know. As stated in an article called “Why this generation is so completely obsessed with the idea of Celebrity” Adam Pliskin explains the real reason to why we follow celebrities as much as we do. This is because we secretly want fame ourselves.
Since even the earliest civilizations, there have been laws. Laws are a fundamental part of our government. They help the average citizen navigate through life when situations arise and accidents happen. They are there as guidelines for safety and overall well-being of a society. A citizen has the power to seek justice through the help of our court system. The legal system also determines the consequences for citizens who break the laws. For the “average citizen” the legal system is right and just.
Female teens look up to celebrities as an image or a role model for self-confidence, self-goals and a positive reflect on their selves. As a girl was growing up, they were taught to use manners, be proper and to dress nicely. Little girls are typically playing with dolls and/or tea cups. Some people spend so much time consumed by the entertainment world that they begin to idolize certain celebrities in hopes of becoming like them. Two major starlets in the eye of countless teenage girls around the world would be Jennifer Lawrence, known for her starring role as Katniss Everdeen in the film The Hunger Games, and Miley Cyrus, a hit singer with number one songs, “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball”. These two stars both have large and supportive fan bases, but which celebrity is the better role model for teenage girls is the question at hand. Jennifer Lawrence is a better role model for teenage girls than Miley Cyrus because of her beliefs, modesty, and humbleness.
We should look at the positive things that people do. The media does not go around reporting all of this. the good things that these people do, just the bad things and their mistakes. They are only human, just like the rest of us. Are these people safe for our children to idolize to look up to?
Athlets have been lookd up to as role models for as long as sports have exsted. There is just something attractive about the thought of being in good physical condition and being talented in sports. But, are athlets the kind of people that children should be looking up to for direction and guidance? Many children often look up to the professional athletes as role models. In fact, in 1995 Sports Illustrated for Kids did a survey for kids who were ages 7 through 12 about who their role model was. The majority of the kids answered that a professional athlete was who they most looked up to. Only four percent of the children answered that their role model was one of thir parents. Because of today?s media, athletes are constantly in the public eye. Everything they do on and off of the playing field. Some professional athletes speak a positive message through their fame by demonstrating constructive ideas such as teamwork and commitment while they are on the field. Even off of the playing field some athletes set a good example by visiting children in schools, going to hospitals, or even setting up foundations and organizations to help the ill and less fortunate people. However, other athletes are not as considerate to the fact that someone may be looking up to them, some athletes are not concerned about anything other than the sport they are getting paid to play and themselves. These athletes are the ones that propose questions over whether athletes should be considered role models or not. A role model can be defined as a person whose behavior, example or success is or can be emulated by others, especially young people. Who would want their child looking up to someone who has been convicted of domestic violence or has a drug addiction? It is an argument of opinion that cannot be settled.
