Over half of the pollution in the ocean that harms the marine life or the plants is from the land. This would be called nonpoint, which is a source of pollution that is caused by runoff. Small things like septic tanks, cars, boats or even larger things like farms produce runoff, which is commonly caused by humans. Billions of cars travel the roads daily leaving small drops of oil on the grounds, which eventually reaches the sea one way or another. Even some water gets delaminated by air pollution that settles into the oceans. Everything one does on land effects what happens in the ocean weather one thinks about it or not. Dirt is even a pollution problem for the ocean. The soil that is on farms or the land can run off into waterways harming …show more content…
The toxics in the water which effect the fish and then fishermen caught theses fish and then you eat them can cause some serious health problems. Just one piece of plastic can mess up the whole system of the food chain. First we start out with a fish just swimming along who then comes up on some plastic who then eats this plastic. This fish has know been exposed to a toxic and is carrying it around. Therefore when the fishermen catches it and brings it make to the restranunt and one eats it then that person is eating the toxics, which can cause some health problems. For example, cancer, birth defects, or even immune system problems can be caused from toxics from the plastic found in the ocean. Another health issue it can cause is it can mess up a woman’s hormones, which is not a good thing. As the toxic enter the food chain they become more toxic as time goes on. Plankton, which is at the bottom of the food chain, absorbs the awful toxic very easily. The toxic then settles in their bodies becoming more toxic then before. A smaller animal then eats them and then the toxic level rises. The larger animal can live longer but as time goes on the toxic gets stronger after it has eaten the smaller animal. As the pollution of the world increases pollution increases causing the marine life to decreases due to pollution in the ocean. This causes what is known as the extension of animals such as fish that people eat. One doesn’t really hear many people talk about people being sick in the 1500s but what if one started to think that maybe it is coming from the foods we eat. In that time people grew their own food so they knew what was going in them now a days we have no idea what is going into our mouths are where its coming from. What will people eat if the pollution is killing all their fish they eat? Is the pollution some of the main causes for people having cancer or other
Which means their obviously bad for the aquatic marine life environment & are cause many different forms of damage for them & us as one. On p.g. 23 of The New York Times upfront magazine “Birds, fish, sea turtles, & others are getting tangled in plastic bags or mistake them for food & choke”. Someone else might argue that they could the plastic bags in landfills instead of oceans. But that counter- argument is flawed because you’re just polluting by burning plastic which is bad on our part we’re not doing our part to support & taking care of the earth. Plastic in the ocean isn't just bad for plants & animals but for humans too because of the food chain some of us eat animals as a meat source such as aqua marine life like fish. If the fishermen catch fish that have been eating plastic then it's in our food supply if we eat that fish it's gonna be bad for us so many will end up getting sick from the plastic inside of the fish then what will we do our aqua marine food supply will go down the drain we couldn’t eat the fish since it's basically contaminated with plastic that we’re dumping there instead of trying to fix it & getting rid of plastic bags for good for the good of the earth. We’re causing damage towards the earth by dumping all that plastic into the ocean which damages our water supply it’ll poison us although we clean the water it depends on how big the plastic particles are, it’ll make us sick & sense it’s been lying in the oceans could bring in new pathogens &
The ocean is inhabited by many and loved by all. Whether you surf the waves or use it for recreational purposes, its important to us all. There are dangers to the ocean that anyone who bathes in it should be aware of. Besides the obvious dangers of the current and the pounding waves, there are possible microscopic enemies at large. Every year the beaches are closed for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it may be for a surfing contest, or if the waves are too dangerous, but the most overlooked may be ocean contaminants. Around 20% of ocean water pollution occurs naturally. Its important for the public to aware of the contaminants that reach our waters and how they get there.
Source 4: A few reasons why beach pollution is happening is because Trash and other materials that beaches rivers, bays, estuaries and oceans eventually wash up on our beaches. It includes plastic bags, bottles and cans, cigarette filters, bottle caps, and lids.Any trash that is not thrown away and is just thrown in the beach and is in the sand can eventually go into the beach and make the water dirty.A lot of people just throw the trash in the water because they do not care. Some people are too lazy to go throw it away in the trash can.
Recently, an uninhabited island in the South Pacific Ocean was found to be polluted with 38 million pieces of plastic that had been carried over by currents (Wang, “No one lives on this remote Pacific island”). The island, dubbed ‘trash island’, is home to diverse animal populations that have all been devastated by the pollution. On the beach, hundreds of birds were seen dead by reporters and scientists. When analyzed, the primary cause of death turned out to be consumption of plastic. When animals ingest plastic, it clogs their stomach and poisons their body with toxic chemicals. These toxic chemicals cause an array of issues, such as reproductive and endocrine problems. Eventually, this leads to death (Knoblauch, “The environmental toll of plastics”). But due to the nature of plastics, it can take hundreds or even thousands of years to completely degrade, meaning that as plastic pollution continues to build up, more places like ‘trash island’ will be discovered. According to conservation scientist Alex Bond, “…[The island] is just an indicator of what’s floating around out there” (Wang, “No one lives on this remote Pacific
The coral reefs require clear, salty water. Pollution from the land, like dirt and mud, enters streams and rivers. It enters the ocean through its natural process of erosion and makes the water cloudy. Other materials dumped at sea are metal, glass, wood, plastic and chemicals. The build up of greenhouse gases is causing global temperature to rise which also makes ocean temperatures rise.

Every time we throw away a plastic bottle, drive our cars, and even burn those millions of fossil fuels to operate all those huge factories, there is a chance it will pollute the ocean and eventually affect the way we live. There should be stricter laws regulating human pollution, in order to protect our ocean ecosystem. The ocean is an abundant source of life. It is home to thousands of different creatures, provides a great source of food, and provides the earth with about one half of the oxygen needed to sustain life. National Geographic: Pollution, especially plastic, is a catastrophic problem.
People pollute the once clean waters with trash, chemicals, and so much more. In his TED talk, Dan Barber briefly spoke about how fish farms are polluting the ocean. Businesses add an array of chemicals (e.g. hydrogen peroxide, teflubenzuron, canthaxanthin, etc.) to fish in order to make natural fish pigment more vibrant, fight disease/bacteria, disinfect waters, and so forth. Some of of the chemicals aren't even necessary. For example canthaxanthin, it's a carotenoids used to make fish such as salmon orangy pink instead of white.
Plastic waste harmfully affects the environment because , fish and other marine animals are getting toxins in them. We consume the fish that may have the toxins from plastic . We all know that all creatures are apart of the food-web , so if one species of an animal starts to die the who...
Albatrosses might eat plastic resin pellets as a mistake for fish eggs and die of starvation because they are not actually eating the nutrients they need. These pellets also have the ability to tear apart their organs. These organisms might also be caught by fisherman for human consumption and end up in human diets as well. The toxins from the plastic build up in the fat and muscle tissues of fish, that humans eat, therefore emptying the stomach is not quite enough. Plastics that sit inside of waters long enough will break down into smaller pieces called microplastics that will never decompose. The sun is what initially breaks down these products with the help of ever moving ocean waves and ocean salt. It is referred to as photodegradation. Most of the pollution within the garbage patches of the oceans are made up of this microscopic material mixed in with larger pollution items such as shoes or dropped cargo. This can be referred to as a smog like environment created by the amount of microplastics. A good example of a small microplastic many people know, are the microbeads used in toothpastes and facial scrubs that are starting to be banned worldwide. Some microorganisms

People are hurting the animals, and they don’t realize it. That’s one of the issues that the people don’t realize what they are doing. All of the sea creatures about 100,000 marine animals and countless fish are being harmed by the floating plastics. Those animals die in the North Pacific every year from either eating the plastic junk or becoming ensnared, and even drowning in it. Since there is plastic in the ocean and it’s killing fish over time and from the over time it could actually make the fishes go extinct because we are throwing our garbage in the ocean, which is killing the species and affects the food chain in the ocean. Also, every people are eating plasticizing additives, drinking them, breathing them, and absorbing them through their skin every single day. Only 3 to 5 percent of plastics are recycled in any way. Which means each person tosses about 185 pounds of plastic every year. So, the plastic never really goes
Plastic pollution negatively affects America’s future. The origin of this environmental pollution is caused by the excessive lack of ethics that human beings have. Many times, people throw garbage on the streets, seas, etc. Not knowing that this will be severely altered the environment, and planet earth conditions. Environmental pollution is found in many places such as plastic products, cleaning products, food, animals, personal care products, and the most dangerous in the environment where the oxygen we breathe and share with other living beings (Eriksen 2013).
The reason why I chose this topic was because I don’t like seeing trash in the oceans, lakes or ponds just anything. It’s annoying how people don’t know how to take care for stuff. Especially that other people see it not just one or two people but thousands of people see it. When people see that there’s trash all around the area there not going to want to go back to that ocean or that part that they went to because they see that it’s all trashy there and it’s not healthy for humans and the ocean. I just don’t like seeing trash anywhere just all over the place I think it’s gross. So I want to talk about this because I don’t like it and I think it’s a good subject to talk about.
Research from the University of California San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography said that species in the ocean consume a projected 12,000 to 24,000 tons of plastic every year in the Pacific Ocean (Nall, 2014). Pollution of recyclable materials in the oceans is one of the leading causes of why some marine species are nearing extinction. Many authors of articles and books analyzing this topic tend to agree that pollution of our oceans is a problem. The future of this problem is where their ideas tend to differ. The following four literature reviews attempt to demonstrate and support my belief that pollution is getting worse in the ocean and more marine life ecosystems are being affected, but there are things that we as humans can do to change this. Imagine a world where we didn’t have to constantly worry about the vicious cycle of humans affecting animals and then animals in turn affecting us through consumption.
