September 11, 2001 marked the most lethal attack to ever take place on United States soil. On this seemingly normal Tuesday morning, nineteen members of the Al-Qaida, hijacked four commercial civilian airlines and crashed them into the twin towers of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon in Washington D.C., and an empty field in Pennsylvania. This deadly attack killed over 3,000 people including Americans and citizens from sixty different countries. Al-Qaeda, translated as “the base”, was led by Osama Bin Laden, who at the time, was operating from Afghanistan. Al-Qaeda’s beginnings can be traced as far back as 1979 when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. However, as a result of the attack, the members of the Muslim community faced many negative repercussions. This inhumane act of complete brutality began the “war on terror” that had huge consequences on the United States and the world. The economy of the US had taken a downward turn before the attack and due to this recession the economy could not withstand the events of 9/11. This drastic downfall left the country in shock and absolute horror. The main purpose of having a strong government is for the country to be able to protect its citizens, and this attack badly shook the superpower that was seen as invincible. The whole world was scarred by this infiltration in the United States’ security, but as horrible as the incident was it united many people with common grievances. States from all over the country sent rescue units to honor the 342 firefighters sand sixty police officers who had given up their lives to save the lives of over 25,000 people.
