Euthanasia is defined “as the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals in a painless way”. Euthanasia a controversial topic and it’s legalisation has been a topic of debate for years. The Catholic Church believes that Euthanasia should be legalised because it goes against human life, they are made in the image of God and it goes against the salvific value of suffering. The majority of society believes Euthanasia should be legalised as everyone has a right to control their life, it is already widespread and guidelines could be put in place if it is legalised.

The Catholic Church believes that Euthanasia goes against the value and dignity of human life. Catholics believe that they were given the naturally attributes of value and dignity, and so all humans were created equally. They believe that through suffering, it will lead them to salvation. Jesus Christ is their prime example of this. Jesus was crucified on the cross and through his sacrifice, the world was cleansed of its sins. Their teachings explain that all Catholics should follow his example and dedicate their lives to others. Their thoughts, feelings, behaviour and especially their suffering are what connects them to Jesus and his sacrifice. It’s their belief that to commit the act of Euthanasia is a rejection of Jesus’ love and his sacrifice he made for them. St. Augustine once said, “that no man should put an end to this life to obtain that better life we look for after death, for those who die by their pwn hand have no better life after death” (City of God, I, 26).
