Carroña (Carrion), by Javier Perez, is an Murano glass sculpture installation located at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York. This sculpture was created in 2011. It consists of taxidermied crows feasting on the remains of a shattered red chandelier made of glass. Carroña is a representational sculpture, meaning that it depicts objects that people can recognize from the everyday world. People can easily recognize the crows and the chandelier which are common objects in today’s world. The sculpture contains many elements of art such as: shape, line, form, texture, contrast, color, pattern and unity. Carroña contains various shapes. Form is the total effect of combined visual qualities within a work. The glass sculpture is classified as a three dimensional form because it exists on a three dimensional plane and not on a 2D surface. Carroña is a free standing sculpture which means that one has the ability to walk around it. It is also a modeling sculpture which uses a moldable material, such as glass, in order to create the artwork. The sculpture has a realistic scale. Scale is the size relationship of one part of the artwork compared to another part. In Carroña, the crows are life size because they are the bodies of real crows. When the crows are placed on the chandelier, the chandelier appears to be of average size. The crows for scale signify to the viewer that the chandelier is neither extremely small nor extremely large. The crows also are used to scale the size of the flowers. They depict how the flowers range from large to very small. There is also proportion present. Proportion is the size relationship of an artwork’s parts compared to its whole. The lifelike scale of both the chandelier and the crows suggest that the sculpture is proportional and that it is the same size as everyday chandeliers or crows.
