There are many different ways to express feelings towards an individual's race, culture, and ethnicity. It is one thing to talk about them, but it is another when everything spoken is nothing but positivity. In Carl Sandburg's poem “Nigger”, he portrays the positive vibes of African Americans. Looking at a title can be very deceiving until actually read. With everything written in free verse, Sandburg expresses the good qualities of individuals through different races, nationalities, and celebrates the common people in the language of the streets. In his poem “Nigger”, he says, “I am the Nigger. Look at me. I am the Nigger.(Sandburg. pp.108). In this poem he describes his version of the African American lifestyle. To Sandburg they are harder than dark earth. Sandburg describes their lifestyle, their culture, and their history that reflects upon others. Sandburg mentions what they love, and also a cause of pain and suffering. He makes a reference to slavery to identify the importance of a black person, and that not all are how others portray them. Sandburg wants to state that they are people too. He uses previous history and emotion to portray the significance of the African American kind to readers. He aims towards the cadence of everyday association and talk as a base and model for his poems.
