If I had to look back at the elementary school version of myself and someone mentioned the word nurse to me my first thought was that is a girl’s profession. While I was interested in medicine I never knew much about the careers in medicine. I have two older brothers, one become a computer analyst the other a computer programmer and my father was a mechanical engineer. In addition, nobody in my family had been involved in the medical field so I had no one to turn to gain knowledge about careers in medicine. Naturally I wanted to follow in my family’s footsteps so I decided I wanted a career in technology. I believe that every person has a calling and its especially true for people in the medical field. Everyone defines nursing in different ways Taylor Lillis Lynn author of the Fundamentals of nursing defines nursing as “a profession that used specialized knowledge and skills to promote wellness and to provide care for people in both health and illness” My best friend thought nurses just takes doctor’s orders, have no say in a patient’s health and just spend their day passing meds. I told him nurses not only have to fulfill doctor’s orders but they have to be advocates, counselors, teachers and healers. In addition, my nephew who is an only child looks up to me very much has been thinking about what he wants to be when he grows. While he is only 13 years old and still has lots of time to make his decision he is already considering a career in nursing. Every time I am in clinical something new always presents itself wheatear my patient is going to an unscheduled test or last minute medication has been order. I have always been the type of person that wants everything done in a timely manner, if something needs to be due by a certain time I make sure it gets done at that time. I quickly discovered that in nursing that is not always the case and in fact it is the exact opposite. At first I was struggling to having to adjust but quickly got the hang out of it but staying claim and not stressing out. I learned that being a nurse you will ever hardly do everything on time and everything is not going to be perfect. Being able to adapt is makes nursing a unique profession and it takes a unique person to do the job. Every clinical day I am reminded how much a nurse has to adapt to new situations and make the best of it and provide the best care possible for the client. Nursing has come a long way since the days of Florence nightingale and the strive she took to get nursing from simple caregivers to the nurses of today. Nursing will always be a profession that will continue to grow and provide quality care to patients. While nursing still sometimes struggles to be recognized as a discipline it will continue to expand and become intricate part of the healthcare
