Analyzing Research Studies My Capstone Proposal Project will be about sleep disturbances associated with cardiac surgery patients. I will be using the qualitative research method for my problem solving approach. My research approach is supported and established in data, otherwise known as the grounded theory (Keele, 2011, p. 47). The qualitative research study I will critically analyze for my Capstone Proposal Project is called Improving Sleep after Open Heart Surgery – Effectiveness of Nursing Interventions. The quantitative research study I will critically analyze for my Capstone Proposal Project is the Assessment of Noise Environment in Cardiac Hospital – A Case Study for an Indian City. I chose both studies since they supported my …show more content…

The significance to nursing is made clear when Ahmed and Tembhurker (2014) states that there needs to be a serious effort to control noise in order to reduce the negative impact on patients and staff. (Score: 4)
Research Question(s)/Hypothesis(es)/Study Variable Ahmed and Tembhurkar’s (2014) null hypothesis is the following: there is no effort needed to control the noise within the hospitals and reduce its negative impact on the patients and staff (p.32). In contrast, the alternative hypothesis is the following: “serious effort is therefore needed to control the noise within the hospitals and reduce its negative impact on the patients and staff” (Ahmed & Tembhurkar, 2014, p. 32). The study variables included were the various locations within the hospital and the noise exposure levels. (Score: 2)

In relation to nursing, “lack of sleep can have negative consequences on health, such as immunosuppression, prolonged wound-healing, increased risk of infection, arrhythmias, increased blood pressure, depression and anxiety and thus affect quality of life, physical functioning, morbidity and mortality” (Greve & Pedersen, 2016). Purpose Statement/Research Question(s) According to Greve and Pedersen (2016), it is argued that nurses play a major role in enhancing quality of sleep. However, there have only been a few clinical trials created in order to study sleep promoting interventions and nurse led interventions (Greve & Pedersen, 2016). It can be proposed that the qualitative research design was chosen correctly since quality of sleep is described subjectively. (Score: 4)
Literature Review/Study Framework Comprehensive literature was used to uncover that psychological and behavioral approaches can be effective in sleep medicine (Greve & Pedersen, 2016). Greve and Pedersen (2016) stated that there were no studies found to address the association between nurses’ knowledge and interventions for sleep disturbances. Out of the 47 references used by in Greve and Pedersen’s (2016) study, none were found to be published within the last five years. (Score:
