Can Doctors Be Leaders, Too? There is this belief by many people that doctors cannot be a part of the leadership movement of any facility unless they are in a position of power in management. The truth is that any person could be a member of management, but not be seen as a leader by the rest of the staff, whereas there are some individuals that others look towards in times of uncertainty and crisis to lead them. Often, physicians that are also considered by others to be leaders are those that are willing to challenge the status quo within the facility to make it better for staff and patients. These are the individuals that have a view of what they believe the future should look like in their medical care facility, and do the work necessary towards making that future a possibility rather than just hoping a change occurs. Modern State of Health Care There is much debate when it comes to health care on any level, and a great deal of this debate has to do with cost. …show more content…
Some of the subjects that are beneficial for those still in school and those looking to add to their skillset may seem more appropriate to a business curriculum, but can benefit health care. These include understanding strategic planning, theories of change management, critical thinking skills, visioneering, applying innovation, dealing with human capital, and creativity. Instilling these skills early can benefit any physician who will be highly desired by health care facilities, but it’s never too late to add to a skills repertoire for those physicians that feel that these types of skills were not adequately focused on during their time in medical school. Encouraging more physicians to take on the role of leadership whether inside of the management team of a medical facility or working without that granted

To some price regulation seems to offer the vision of a free lunch by checking the monopolistic power of health care providers. To others, it offers a convenient way to lower the predicted budgetary cost of entitlement spending. A third motive seems to be a longing to redistribute resources to patients deemed needier.
Health care is one of the most debated issues in the United States today and it 's necessary to understand the basics of this problem. Approximately 50 million people living in the United
The future of healthcare is ever changing, and with that comes change management, which brings individuals on board with that change. According to Vora (2013), the change management model includes first, determine the need for change. Second, prepare and plan for the change. Third, implement the change. Finally, sustain the change (Carroll, 2015). As a leader, I feel that it is my obligation to not only continue with my education, but to aid others in furthering their education and
The pinnacle of a highly functioning healthcare organization is the Magnet Model which shares the servant leadership tenants of empowerment, fostering interdisciplinary relationships, leadership development, individual development, access to resources, and staff participation in decision making6. Looming budget cuts and recent reports of poor healthcare delivery have resulted in s an urgent need to enhance care despite forthcoming reductions in resources. With these enhanced challenges it is imperative that leaders employ strategies and embrace philosophy that will maximize resources. The Institute of Medicine has released a statement emphasizing health care services leaders need to be involved with others as full partners in a context of mutual respect and collaboration7. Furthermore, an analysis of challenges in health care concluded that there are no models to meet the need for human resource management and work environment in health care, however focus should be on flexibility, lifelong learning, interdisciplinary teamwork and shared decision making8 reflecting the tenants of servant
In order to be an effective physician, one must possess exemplary leadership ability. Medicine revolves around constant teamwork between varying degrees of health care professionals. Collaboration and delegation are key in improving the overall health of others. I recognize the importance of leadership in any organization, and fortunately this past year, have come to expand on my concept of what a leader can be. A true leader provides an example for others to follow, primarily with actions, not simply words. By joining the BSA officer team, I wish to lead others with similar aspirations to achieving their personal goals through advice and action. A position of leadership brings influence, and I seek to utilize that in order to provide BSA members with valuable and educational experiences on a consistent basis. I believe I have many great ideas for BSA and wish to obtain a role as a BSA officer in order to implement as many of those ideas as possible. If given the chance, I desire to do everything in my influence to make the next year of BSA greater than ever before, through more frequent meetings, engaging and relevant community service, and entertaining social opportunities where members can bond.
Healthcare has now become one of the top social as well as economic problems facing America today. The rising cost of medical and health insurance impacts the livelihoods of all Americans in one way or another. The inability to pay for medical care is no longer a problem just affecting the uninsured, but now is becoming an increased problem for those who have insurance as well. Health care can now be seen as a current concern. One issue that we face today is the actual amount of healthcare that is affordable.
The American Health Care system has prided itself on providing high quality services to the citizens who normally cannot afford them. This system has been in place for years and until now it did a fairly decent job. The problem today is money; the cost of hospital services and doctor fees are rising faster than ever before. The government has been trying to come up with a new plan these past few years even though there has been strong opposition against a new Health Care system. There are many reasons why it should be changed and there are many reasons why it shouldn’t be changed. The main thing that both sides heads towards is money. Both sides want to save money just in different ways.
The U.S. expends far more on healthcare than any other country in the world, yet we get fewer benefits, less than ideal health outcomes, and a lot of dissatisfaction manifested by unequal access, the significant numbers of uninsured and underinsured Americans, uneven quality, and unconstrained wastes. The financing of healthcare is also complicated, as there is no single payer system and payment schemes vary across payors and providers.

A manager’s leadership style must influence staff and others to take them seriously. A manager sets the tempo for the employees’ work ethic. Effective leadership from healthcare managers is important to the modern healthcare reform (Kumar, 2013). Leadership engagement in healthcare explains how a problem could affect a healthcare organization. Managers that hold leadership roles must adopt a certain style that can be functional for his or her initial organization to be successful. Performance improvement can be a very serious aspect of leadership engagement (Croxton, 2011). Healthcare managers need to have people from all areas involved to work effectively. Without the consistency of getting all staff and physicians involved, the organization may suffer greatly.
As a future healthcare leader, I will start by collecting data on the health of the community that my organization serves. I will develop a five-step program to contribute to public health efforts within my organization. My five-step program towards public health will involve monitoring, diagnosing and investigating, informing and educating, partnering, and researching. I will monitor the health indicators of my community and be aware of health needs and disparities. I will seek to identify hazards through research and analysis and diagnose root causes. Once root causes are recognized, improvement is possible. It is
Molecular and Microbiology. Many people hear the major and shudder; thoughts of sleepless nights, studying for courses unintelligible by the ‘average’ person, mad scientists hunched over test tubes and doctors doing open heart surgery. Research science and medicine, that’s what my major is geared towards, and I’m pursuing the medicine side of it all. Maybe I’ll be that open heart surgeon that comes to mind, or maybe just a family practitioner, either way, I want more than anything to be a doctor, a great doctor, and while my M&M degree is the first step in making that happen, I’d have to say that being a Lead Scholar is the second. Many people may not see the medical profession as one that requires being a leader to others, as you make your own decisions and people feel that you work on your own. You consult patients, help them with their problems, you work on each one on your own. If there is any involvement with any other health professional, people think it’s more like a team, with little to no individual leadership. They’re wrong, and right. Being a doctor is being a part of a team, and being a part of a team¬ does take personal leadership.
