Many people have been born with challenges - congenital heart disease, cleft palette, clubfoot, down syndrome, etc. - they were all God's children. Many of these are born into a family and community with loving support. Members of the medical community, with special talents, spend their lives caring for them, working hard to find ways to heal them and work even harder to find ways to help them acclimate into the mainstream. Caitlyn, as well as countless others, have afflictions that aren't seen at birth and can be hidden throughout their lives. They often have to fight their way through on their own and for some it takes a lifetime. As much as it is difficult to understand, Caitlyn Jenner, is a women and, to many, she is a hero. She is

Loewen defines heroification as “a degenerative process (much like calcification) that makes people over into heroes” (Loewen 11). During this process, negative or controversial facts are often ignored or altered in regards to these heroes, which create “perfect creatures without conflicts, pain, credibility, or human interest (Loewen 11). When one changes or omits facts concerning figures in history for this type of glorification, we are left with an invented story of the event or person; in other words, history has become a myth. History textbooks are filled with these types of glorifications, especially older texts. The purpose of heroification is to present events or people in a favorable light and to give ideal role models in which to follow. In my own words, I call Loewen’s heroification an effective form of brainwashing. For example, I was always taught that the Civil War was fought to free slaves, but later learned this war was about states succeeding from the Union. Many people still believe the Emancipation Proclamation’s purpose was to free the slaves; however, it was actually the last resort Lincoln used to win the Civil War. Of course, this is not how these events were portrayed to most of us in History class. Heroification alters the purpose of these events so that we, as citizens, can feel proud that America did away with slavery because our forefathers felt it was morally wrong. Loewen also points out how heroification can lead to role models in the case of Helen Keller, “the blind and deaf girl who overcame her physical handicaps, as an inspiration to generations of schoolchildren” (Loewen 12). Caitlyn Jenner, twice an Olympic triathlon athlete, was given the ESPY Arthur Ashe Award for Courage. Caitlyn now blazes new trails. For so long, she lived a life that her family and society expected of her: a loyal, loving son and father, and outstanding sportsman before her transformation. Her newest role as an advocate for the transgender community may become one of her greatest roles. Presently, Caitlyn Jenner’s purpose is to promote sexual diversity, differences, and respect for all human beings. As I watched Jenner accept her award, I reflected back on my understanding of transgender.
Anyone could be a hero. Age, race, religion, and personalities do not limit one from being a hero. A hero is someone people admire for their actions. One moment they could be admired by people, in another moment, they could be despised. Donald Trump is a fine example of this.
My sports hero is Kayleen Shafer, the starting catcher for the Oregon State University softball team. Kayleen is nineteen years old and has been playing softball since she was seven. Kayleen inspires me because she excels in her academics, always has a positive attitude, demonstrates excellent leadership skills, and performs at an extremely high level on the softball field. Kayleen’s kindness and softball excellence make me strive to be a better player and person on and off the field.

Joseph Campbell says that “a hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” In this quote, it says many things that I believe applies to Danielle Gletow. She puts children of all kinds on a higher pedestal than herself. She helps children reach maximum potential. Danielle Gletow has proven to be a hero by being influential to children in foster care, practicing what she preaches, and being passionate about helping kids have a normal life.
The Hero’s Journey is a pattern of narrative that appears in novels, storytelling, myth, and religious ritual. It was first identified by the American scholar Joseph Campbell in his book A Hero with Thousand Faces. Campbell also discussed this pattern in his interview to Bill Moyers which was later published as a book The Power of Myths. This pattern describes the typical adventure of the archetype known as The Hero, the person who goes out and achieves great deeds. Campbell detailed many stages in the Hero’s Journey, but he also summarized the pattern in three fundamental phases: Separation, Ordeal, and Return that all heroes, in spite of their sex, age, culture, or religion, have to overcome in order to reach the goal. Alice in Wonderland, written by Lewis Carroll, provides a good example of the Hero's Journey. This story describes the adventures of Alice, a young English girl, in Wonderland. Although she lacks some of the stages identified by Campbell, she still possesses many of them that are necessary for a Hero to be considered a Hero.

Hero’s can also be someone who has made a change in the world and or a society like Rosa Parks.
