What is the first thing you might do when you wake up in the morning and finish getting ready? Obviously as adults, we try to eat breakfast and during that time, most of us will have some type of caffeine to start of their day. According to the FDA, the US Food and Drug Administration, about 90% of adults, age 25-65, consume about 200 mg of caffeine every day, whether it is in coffee, energy drinks, tea, soda or even food [1.1]. This brings up the question to many about why has caffeine become such a key player in consumption for so many adults all around the world. According to Medical New Today, if you consume about three cups of caffeine per day can reduce liver cancer by 50% and consuming four cups a day could lower risks of throat or mouth cancer. From a study from the Harvard School of Public Health, they suggested that having two to four cups of coffee per day can reduce suicide risks in adults. Also, Harvard School of Public Health found that having about 200 mg of caffeine per day can boost your long term memory. Many other studies of caffeine have also suggested that caffeine may protect against diabetes, Parkinson's disease, cardiovascular disease and strokes [1.3]With what is given as the positive effects on caffeine, it is still a nervous system stimulant which can mean caffeine can become an addiction for an individual. The caffeine we intake jumpstarts many of the behavioral mechanisms that are also jumpstarted by other recreational drugs. Just like these other drugs, caffeine can be only know for some individuals to have only positive effects on them such as gaining higher energy or alertness in work, school or in a social setting. With this type of idea for a human to perceive caffeine as, they can develop a caffeine use disorder. The type of drug, food, or environment condition that surrounds you, it affects the rate your liver enzymes work and how fast it metabolizes the caffeine. There are some drugs that use the same enzymes for deactivating the caffeine in the liver where it slows down the caffeine to be metabolized because the caffeine they digest has to “wait in line” which means an a lot slower metabolism speed. An example of this is for individuals who smoke, they have more faster caffeine metabolism compared to non-smoker individuals.
