Bullying is an ongoing problem throughout schools in the world. Between 1 in 4 and 1 in 3 U.S. students say they have been bullied at school, and most bullying happens in middle school (Facts about Bullying). Those numbers are a good indication that bullying in schools is an important issue and it something that needs to be addressed. The national statistics says that 70.6% of young people said they have witnessed bullying in their schools, and 28 % of U.S. students in grade 6-12 experience bullying (Facts about Bullying). Now with social media, and technology, kids can also be cyber bullied. Looking at the responsibilities of the school social workers, one is providing a safe environment for the student or students that are being bullied. School social workers are responsible for providing crisis interventions, developing interventions strategies to improve a student’s academic success, and they have responsibilities to the parents (School Social Worker’s Role). They work with the family and community.

School social workers play the roles of advocators, educators, counselors, and facilitators. They advocate for their students, the parents of the students, the school staff, and the community. The school social worker can educate the members about bullying, and the warning signs that go along with bullying. Teachers spend most of the time with the students, so if they are aware of the warning signs, they can address the situation. The school social worker can also educate the students on different ways to handle the bullying situation. They also play the role of counselor when they are working with the students. Lastly the school social workers play the role of facilitators. In this role this would help facilitate team/staff meetings. Here they can address the bullying problem in the school. The first SMART Goal for this intervention is by September 2016, the students will be able to define bullying, give examples of bullying, and ways to handle bullying when it happens in the school. The second SMART Goal for the intervention is by May 2017, the number of incidents from the previous school year when the intervention wasn’t implemented will decrease by 30%. Incidents include physical, verbal, social, and cyber bullying. Creating SMART Goals will allow for the school to determine the effectiveness of the intervention that is being
