Breast pumping is a wonderful way to continue to provide your baby nutritious breast milk while you are at work or away with friends for the evening. Because breast milk production increases the more that the baby nurses, breast pumping after nursing can also help struggling moms to increase their milk supply. Make your breast pumping sessions successful with these easy tips.
Acquire a Breast Pump that Works for You
There are a variety of different breast pumps available with different features. Some models allow for hands-free pumping, which will free up your hands for writing or typing while pumping at work. Models with two pumps allow you to pump both breasts at the same time, saving you money. The Affordable Care Act requires that most insurance companies provide breast

Because there is no "standard" size of breasts when it comes to moms, you may have larger or smaller breasts and require a different size of flange. An ill-fitting flange can decrease milk production or cause clogged milk ducts. Try the standard-size of flange to see if it works for you. The nipple should move freely in the flange, with a small amount of your areola being drawn in while pumping. If too much areola is being drawn in or the the flange is tight on your nipple, a larger or smaller flange can make pumping more comfortable and more productive.
Establish a Pumping Schedule
Most nursing babies require milk every three to four hours. In order to get the most out of your pumping sessions, establish a pumping schedule that mimics your baby's needs by pumping at least every three hours. Begin in the morning, when breast milk production is at its highest, and continue to pump throughout the day. Each pumping session should last between 10 and 15 minutes. Experts recommend pumping at least eight to 10 times a day for the best results.

Breastfeeding in public needs to become a regular thing; so it is not deemed unusual and made a big deal of. There is no valid reason as to why a woman should be denied the right to breastfeed her child in public.
It is often at an inconvenient time when a woman needs to breastfeed. If she does not nurse or at least pump, milk can leak from her breasts and create messy and embarrassing marks on her shirt. She cannot prevent this from occurring without receiving some sort of relief. If she waits to nurse her baby until she gets to a private area, she must deal with a fussy child and the attention that comes with it. A child having a tantrum typically causes more of a scene than a woman breastfeeding. Females have to make a decision to either deal with the judgment that comes with public breastfeeding or wait until they can find a bathroom or private place to pump or
In extreme cases, mothers may need to try experimenting to breastfeed on one side over four hours to find out how much time per breast works best.
Concept analysis is the breakdown of a problem into pieces to figure out ways to form a conclusion on how to correct, or improve, the problem. This response reviews a concept analysis that looked at problems with successful breastfeeding. In the Journal of Obstetric, Gynecologic, & Neonatal Nursing (JOGNN), Mulder (2006) identifies the four key elements of effective breastfeeding: “positioning, latch, sucking, and milk transfer” (p. 334) using the concept analysis by Walker and Avant. The method of analysis, steps of process, and results are applied to successful breastfeeding.
The infant and mother create a bond between the two of them and the mother usually feels more confident about raising her infant. “By holding your infant safe in your arms and providing them with nourishment from your body, you as a mother are offering your infant a sense of continuity from pre- to post-birth life. Allowing your infant to have this time, you are promoting their understanding of a sense of love and protection and security that they need to adjust comfortably into this new world.” (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2015). When breastfeeding, the mother is able to lose more weight and may return to her pre-pregnancy weight with ease. Due to hormones released when breastfeeding, the mother’s menstrual cycle will come to a stop making it harder for her to conceive again before her body is ready. There are many risks that are lowered when breastfeeding, such as; lower risk of postpartum diabetes, postpartum ovarian and breast cancer, and rheumatoid
Women do not breastfeed long enough. Although healthcare workers try to promote the breast method, many women do not continue with it. Breastfeeding does come with challenges; however, the phrase “breast is best” is the role of the nurse in conjunction with education. A mother a...
What are the benefits of breastfeeding, you might be wondering? Well for starters breast milk is very crucial for a newborn. Not only does it feed and
Breastfeeding is a nonsexual and nurturing bond between a mother and her child and not the business of anyone else. As a society, we must offer protection for these vulnerable and cherishing mothers and create a welcoming and comfortable climate for them to feel empowered. Let’s put an end to this mother of all battles. Thank
Exclusive breastfeeding takes place when you give your baby nothing but your milk; that is, the baby's only nutrition and hydration is milk suckled directly from your breasts. A normal healthy baby does not need water, other liquids, or solids during the first six months of life. The healthiest gift you can give your baby is to exclusively breastfeed him for the first six months of life. Breast milk is sufficient for nutrition and hydration. (LLLI, 2010)
Breastfeeding is the natural process of a woman feeding a child from her breast. Other names for this process are Nursing or Suckling. The American Academy of Physicians make the following policy statement on breastfeeding: “Breastfeeding is the physiological norm for both mothers and their children. Breast milk offers medical and psychological benefits not available from human milk substitutes (Breastfeeding (Policy Statement), 2014)” Feeding a child from the breast of a mother is a natural phenomenon that many mammals like humans do to provide for their young. Before the scientific technology of formula came about, the breast was the only way to feed an infant right after birth.
Breastfeeding in public should not come with harassment and discrimination against mothers. Breastfeeding has many health benefits for the infants receiving the breast milk and the mothers that are providing it. Breastfeeding can limit the diseases that a child can contract. It can also limit the risk of life threatening illnesses for the mother as well. The breastmilk also helps speed up cognitive development in the infant. Mothers, everywhere who breastfeed, are being harassed and discriminated in workplace settings as well as public settings. Laws have not been put in place to prevent harassment and discrimination although many cases have been filed by victimized mothers. It is an outrage and should be socially acceptable to breastfeed your hungry infant in public. Because of its amazing qualities, breast milk is very important to the well-being of an infant and should not be shamed in public.
It's important not to over pump because the body will produce as much milk as the breasts dispensed the previous day; so once the woman is able to cope with the fullness to the point that she no longer needs to pump, the breasts will stop over filling, they will only produce what the baby needs. Sleeping at a slight incline will help the breasts from feeling so leaden in the morning and letting the baby nurse as often as they want will help to keep the breasts from producing too much milk and alleviate the uncomfortable feeling. Sore Nipples Sore, dry, or even cracked nipples are actually common the first week of breastfeeding; to help combat sore nipples the mother should allow the nipple to air dry as often as possible, once the nipple is completely dry she should apply some lanolin to the nipple. The lanolin will moisturize the skin and protect the skin from chapping which can occur from nursing; if the nipples are too sore to apply the lanolin, it may be applied to a nursing pad, and then placed on the sore nipple. Sticking With it Many mothers want to breastfeed their babies then quit for one reason or another after a few weeks; during the great depression when formula was only available to the wealthiest people over 80% of women were able to breastfeed their babies, today less than 40% of women breastfeed
Women should be able to breast-feed and not be embarrassed or ridiculed for doing so. They should be encouraged more to breast-feed and or pump in the work place. Most important they should have more education on breast-feeding and counseling for time management or complications they may have.
"Breast is best." A slogan widely known across the nation encouraging mothers to give their infants what the American Academy of Pediatrics acknowledges as a multifaceted health booster for mothers and infants alike. American Academy of Pediatrics recommends mothers exclusively breastfeed for the first six months of their infant 's life, yet many mothers are falling short of this recommendation. Survey research indicated 75.5% of children were ever breastfed. Of that 75.5% of children ever breastfed, only 12.4% were reported to be exclusively breastfeeding at six months.
During one of my shifts on postpartum I was helping a nurse look after a mom with her first baby. She really wanted to be able to breastfeed but she was having a lot of troubles getting her baby to latch on. It was a Saturday and there was no lactation consultant working who could come in to help her. Her baby was also small for gestational age, so she did have risk for hypoglycemia, making it really important for her baby to be feeding to ensure her blood sugars would not drop. After each attempt at breastfeeding and being unsuccessful, the mom would look very upset. The nurse tried to help her by showing her different breastfeeding positions and techniques and teaching her to express her milk and put it in the baby’s mouth. The
