An experience that has had a very big significance on my life is when I broke the 4x1 school record.Throughout the season, my 4x1 team had a lot of success but breaking the school record wasn’t something that came easy. My relay team was able to receive first place at many meets and we even qualified for the Drake Relays and somehow the record wasn’t ours. One day, my coach came up and explained if I was to break this record, I would be the very first girl in my grade to break a school record and compete at the state level. All I had to do for my team was to run 13.3 seconds. All season I ran around 13.7-14.2 splits. That gave me so much dedication to be the best track athlete I could be. Everyone has a special event that determines our life journey. This event can give us identity, happiness or even pain and sadness. The special event that changed my life was deciding to play basketball because basketball helped me find peace, happiness and gave me identity. When I was ten years old my grandfather succumbed to cancer. His death created hatred inside of me.

The most meaningful and challenging experiences in my life have been through sports and the 4-H club. They have instilled the values of perseverance, confidence, and teamwork within me. I feel that my peers and others could learn valuable life lessons through participating in these organizations. They are not just clubs, but a guiding light for life. For example in sports I have had the opportunity to play on both losing and winning teams. This has given me a different perspective of looking at things. I now realize that even if you fail or lose that is no reason to give up, you still have to get right back up. Just realize your mistakes and errors. Then come back the next time, mentally and physically, ready to meet the challenge. To often in life youth and adults alike fail at something and automatically think that they cannot do it, and give up. Instead of just pushing themselves to run another lap, lift another set, study for another hour, or learn another theorem. Imagine a world if the early American settlers had given in to the British, if the North had given in to the South after the first loss of the civil war, or if Michael Jordan had given up after being cut from the team in high school. People just need to learn to have perseverance and believe in themselves. 4-H has been a series of stepping-stones for me. When I first started out at age four I was shy and afraid to do things that I had not done before, but now I have blossomed into a confident and outgoing young man. I no longer fear getting up in front of large groups and speaking because of the experiences I've had in public speaking events. In addition, 4-H has given me the chance to develop myself as a leader. Over the years I have held various leadership positions on the club, county, and district levels. Also, 4-H has given me the chance to go into the community and help people by leading youth in workshops, assisting the handicap and elderly, and also learn from what others have to teach. In both of these organizations I learned the need for teamwork. For example last year my football team went 0-11 and the main reason because of that was we were not a team.
A person does not experience many events that shape their life in a large way, whether it be for better or worse. I have had just one major situation that has sculpted me into the person that I am today. In February of 2008, I was diagnosed with a life changing disease; it would relieve me of the agony I had been experiencing for as long as I could remember, but also restrict my diet for the rest of my life.
As a child I suffered an event that framed my life, a catastrophe that would change my life at least temporarily. This catastrophe changed things all around me, things in my family changed and things at home changed ever since that day. I remember we were all exited, we were going on a family vacation to different regions of Colombia.
It happened when I was thirteen, I suffered a hockey injury that helped me to realize the area I wanted to study and hopefully have career in. The time it took me to rehabilitate my shoulder was a time of great learning for me but it also came with a great deal of adversity. It was an injury that sidelined me for weeks while at the same time pushed me on my way to a new work ethic and a new enthusiasm for learning.
One accomplishment that is important to me was landing a lead role and performing in my high school’s theatre production of “Annie”. I auditioned for the musical with the certainty that I was not going to land a part because I felt like my singing voice and my acting skills were not good enough, but I still auditioned because the theatre teacher asked me to since I was an extra in the previous musical and she knew I had some potential. Surprisingly I got a callback and landed a lead role. I felt proud of myself because I stepped out of my comfort zone and actually accomplished something by doing this.
Everyone has a story, a pivotal moment in their life that started to mold them into the person they are today and may even continue to mold you to the person that you will become, I just had mine a little bit earlier than others. When I was three years old my brother became a burn survivor. It may seem too early for me to remember, but I could never forget that day. Since then, I have grown, matured and realized that what my family and I went through has been something of a benefit to be and an experience that has helped me in deciding what I want to do with the rest of my life.
During my warm up, freshman year, I was lost in the crowd of everyone and was afraid to be myself. The first mile, my sophomore year, I worked out some of my nerves and started to become myself. Junior year, the second mile of my high school race, I worked on myself and really decided on the person I wanted to be. The last year of high school, my third mile, has been one of the best years to date and leaves me hopeful for the future. My most courageous moment that I can recall occurred when I used to skateboard. There was a skate park on Main Street in Sultan which had several obstacles that allowed skateboarders to perform a variety of tricks. There were three main types of tricks you could do at the local skate park; The Drop, The Grind, and The Jump. In The Drop, riders climb to the top of a steep ramp then ride down, quickly picking up speed. In The Grind, you would gain enough speed and balance on a steel beam as you skid across it quickly. The final and most difficult trick was The Jump; during The Jump riders accelerate rapidly down a ramp and then jump off a ramp and into the air.
The start of the 2002 track season found me concerned with how I would perform. After a disastrous bout with mononucleosis ended my freshmen track season, the fear of failure weighed heavily on my mind. I set a goal for myself in order to maintain focus and to push myself like nothing else would. My goal for my sophomore track season was to become a state champion in the 100 meter hurdles. I worked hard everyday at practice and went the extra mile, like running every Sunday, to be just that much closer to reaching my goal. The thought of standing highest on the podium in the center of the field, surrounded by hundreds of spectators, overcame my thoughts of complaining every time we had a hard workout. When I closed my eyes, I pictured myself waiting in anticipation as other competitors names were called out, one by one, until finally, the booming voice announced over the loudspeaker, "...and in first place, your 2002 100 meter hurdle champion, from Hotchkiss, Connie Dawson." It was visions like these that drove me to work harder everyday.
I had never really been a part of a team that had a chance to win something, but the potential was always there. I finally got my chance to be a part of such a team my sophomore year of track. Mr. Jones, the head track coach, had decided to experiment with some different races to gain more team points. Since the girls' team lacked a medley relay, he placed Cindy, Kim, Susan and I in those spots. Cindy would run the 400, Kim would run the 200, and Susan and I would start the race off by each running the 100. We all had worked viciously to earn those spots by running off against our teammates.
Many years ago when I was a freshman in high school, an event happened to me that changed my life for the better. My friend invited me to go hiking with him and his sister. He was going to go hiking in Yosemite. The following day I prepared myself mentally and physically in order to accomplish this hike.
If you do not know state track feels like you are being put in the spotlight, like everyone is watching you. Of course, this was the most memorable moment of my track season. My teammates and I had made it out to Des Moines, IA to run on the blue oval with many different athletes, some who ran sprints, some who ran long distance and some who just did field events. It was a packed stadium with many talented track runners from all over the state that would go on to run in college and maybe even farther than that someday. Preparing to run, we warmed up for our race by setting up five hurdles on the green turn in the middle of the track and going over them, then we would sit, talk and stretch looking at other teams around us. While warming up we had become more and more nervous. We knew what we had to do and we knew we had to believe in each other just like we had done all season. The greatest achievement in my life would have to be my success in the sport of football. I started playing the game at the age of eight. It stuck with me throughout my life until now. During a football game there are numerous amounts of dynamic situations to be involved with. There are so many crucial actions that take place in the matter of seconds. In a certain instance in my life , the game had a strong impact on my life. It took place my senior year against our rivals, the best team in the district. That Monday we began preparing for the coming Friday. It was a typical week until I woke up Wednesday morning. I was routinely late for school running around the house. On my way out the door the phone brought me to an abrupt stop. Turning around, I started to sprint to the phone. A few steps into it, I crushed my little toe on the leg of my couch. Face down on the carpet, I proceeded to scream in pain. Answering the phone quickly got check off my things to do list. As soon as I could regain my sanity I hopped over to the couch and forgot about school. My toe suddenly turned black and swollen. It was the worst coincidence that could’ve happened to me. I went to the hospital later that day, where I heard that my foot was broken and I couldn’t play.
