It has been shown that the brain works in many mysterious ways, some of which have not been discovered or explained yet. Though one of the most fascinating yet more controversial discoveries is brain dominance, or the left and right hemispheres and what roles each hemisphere has in our lives. Have you ever wondered why you write better with your right or left hand or why you tend to see out of your right or left eye better? Both these two things, as well as many others are determined by which hemisphere is more dominant. There are different theories or superstitions about left or right dominance of the brain. One of the most well-known superstitions is spilling salt and throwing it over your shoulder. When it comes to genetics, the theory that there are two alleles, or two manifestations of a gene at the same genetic location, these alleles are called0 the “D” gene and the “C” gene. The “D” gene is more frequent in the population and is more likely to occur as part of the genetic heritage of an individual. What promotes right-handed preference in the majority of humans is the “D” gene. The “C” gene is less likely to occur within the gene pool. However, when present, the hand preference of the individual with the “C” gene is determined randomly. People with the “C” gene will have a fifty percent chance of being right-handed. These theories can explain the presence of left-handed children in right-handed families and right-handed children in left-handed families.
