Looking in my mom’s yearbook, majority of the students have braces. Comparing her yearbook to my yearbook from this year, almost half of my class has perfectly straight pearly white teeth and a few still have braces. Over the years, orthodontist have been putting children in braces earlier and faster than they did years ago. Due to this, some patients are having to get a second set of braces because their jaw has shifted and teeth are out of line again. Early orthodontic care is necessary for cases that are in desperate need to correct problems like an overbite or crossbite. Orthodontist are seeming to put braces and start treatment on children that have not even lost all over their primary teeth, causing the second set of braces later on. Are orthodontist giving their patients the best option for them or is it the best option for their pocket? History of Braces Think about junior high school and try to picture all the students that had braces appose to how many did not. In my class, majority of the students either had their braces just put on or some already had them for one year. Once the rumor started getting out, everyone hurried into their orthodontist to set up their treatment. The first attempt at braces was made by Pierre Fauchard in 1728. Fauchard the device known as the, Bandeau. A horseshoe-shaped piece of metal that was supposed to keep the natural arch of the teeth and mouth in place. Later on, in 1757, Pierre Bourdet, the dentist to the King of France, discovered how the Bandeau by Fauchard, had improved greatly. He wrote in his book, The Dentist’s Art, how it can be improved.
