In the excerpt from the novel, Boy's Life, by Robert McCammon and in “Emancipation: A Life Fable,” by Kate Chopin a similar theme is developed. A theme is a message the author wants you to understand. The theme that is illustrated by both authors is freedom. Freedom is developed in both Boy’s Life, and “Emancipation: A Life Fable,” through the lives of the characters. In his story, Boy’s Life, Robert McCammon demonstrates the desire for freedom through the character Cory Mackenson. We see this clearly when the author writes, “ ‘Have a good summer,’ Mrs. Neville said, and I realized suddenly that I was free.” This illustrates a child’s longing to be free from the “iron bars” of school. Cory Mackenson portrays the yearning to be free a second time in the except, Boy’s Life. The reader can see this clearly when McCammon writes, “I ran out along the corridor, my arms unencumbered by books, my mind unencumbered by facts and figures, quotations and dates.” This supports Cory’s longing to be free from the confines of school by demonstrating how he is away from all the books, tests, and knowledge he learned that year. …show more content…
