Book Summary: The Hate U Give By Angie Thomas

No one is born a racist, it has been learned and therefore can be unlearned by using words and different fictional stories to reiterate the minds of us students and those of younger generations. In the book, “The Hate U Give”, written by Angie Thomas, Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a white police officer. After reading the “ The Hate U Give”, I strongly believe fiction should not be taken out of school curriculums. “I never know which Starr I should be. I can use some slang, but not too much slang, some attitude, but not too much attitude, so I’m not a 'sassy black girl.' I have to watch what I say and how I say it, but I can’t sound 'white.” (Thomas) The significance of this quote is that people don't know how they should present themselves in front of others because they are afraid of others saying they are acting like a “color”. We should be able to act like ourselves without being told to stop acting “black” or “white”. The author is trying to show us readers that Starr is having trouble finding out who she really is, she doesn't want others to think of her differently if she is acting “black” or “white”.“I can't change where I come from or what I've been through, so why should I be ashamed of what makes me, me?” (Thomas) Starr is learning that she shouldn't be ashamed of herself , because of the color of her skin and that she should be proud of she is. Using books like those similar to the “Hate U Give”, really show issues that readers themselves or others may not be facing and to be more open minded towards those who struggle with certain issues they don't have. It's also great for those struggling with the same issues to relate and reflect
