On the 13 – 15 of February 1945, during the final months of World War II (1939-45), Allied forces bombed the German city of Dresden. Dresden, which was often called the “Florence of the Elbe” because of its impressive baroque architecture and cultural significance, had been until the raid, one of the last major German city undamaged by the war. However, the firebombs that the Allies dropped on the city destroyed much of historic city center, and up to 35,000 people, mostly civilians were killed in the ensuing firestorm.

In the 70 years since the bombing of Dresden, the event has remained the center of controversy and debate, and as a result, the bombing has become the flag-bearer of ethically questionable tactics used by the Allies. However, the perspective that the bombing of Dresden were justified is very common among the officials responsible for the bombing, and especially Air Marshall Arthur “Bomber” Harris, who was both the architect and leading proponent of strategic bombing never wavered in his conviction that the bombing of Dresden was not only justifiable but necessary. Harris wrote in his autobiography the morality of the bombing of Dresden;

“I know that the destruction of so large and splendid a city at this late stage of the war was considered unnecessary even by a good many people who admit that our earlier attacks were as fully justified as any other operation of the war.
