Blood is the river of life. When you think of blood you think of a red substance that comes from your body? But, is blood just that, or is it more? Does it have a more significant meaning then that? In 1658, A Dutch woman named Jan Swammerdam, who was also a naturalist, was the first to look at red blood cells under a microscope. Even the first scientists to look at red blood cells did not know how important they were to mankind. Like in the novel “My Soul to Keep” by Tananarive Due, we are reminded that blood can have a very important role in our lives. It is made by one’s bones. Blood is made up of a variety of things. The different type of bloods has different chemical make ups. For example, red blood cells are structurally complex and contain a protein called hemoglobin. In fact, most of the blood cells in our body is made up of red blood cells. One thing that seems to be come amongst all the types of blood is that water is present. Majority of the makeup of blood is water. This water inside blood is in a form of liquid called plasma. Blood is vital to the body. The circulation of blood provides the body nutrients and oxygen. The red blood cells are used with in the body to transport oxygen. White blood cells are used to fight of infection. Blood is also used to carry away waste products to kidney and liver. In the kidney and liver, the blood is filtered out. It makes blood clots to prevent blood loss. It assist in maintaining homeostasis. It also maintains pH levels. A body without blood would not be able to carry out functions that are needed to survive. One of its greatest scientific advantages is that blood can be used to test diseases. One of its most common usage as a symbol is in the Hebrew Bible. Blood is referred to in the old testament and new testament of the bible. Blood is sacred according to the bible. One should be avoiding drinking blood because It is life. As said in Leviticus 17 verse 11, “For the life of a creature is in the blood and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life. According to Romans 5 verse 3, “Being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.” Other uses blood is used for in the bible is the ritual of communion, the Lord’s Supper, or Eucharist. Communion is used to symbolized Jesus and how he is our sole provider. Blood also represents the Passover as shown in the story told in Exodus.
