In Anaya’s work Bless Me, Ultima she showcases how religious beliefs can lead to self discovery. Through a series of events one is collided with opposing religions and this leads him to his true identity. Antonio, a devout catholic, begins to question his religious beliefs which leads to self discovery and supports Anaya’s work. Antonio grew up as a catholic believing in one god. Antonio never questioned God’s power and was truly devoted to him. Anaya proves this by stating, “The power of God is so great”(55). This shows Antonio’s state of mind. Antonio is set on who he wants to believe in and has no question or doubt. Antonio later comes to realize that there are other gods out their. This leads to Antonio questioning God’s power. Anaya shows Antonio’s questioning when he encounter the golden carp, “If the golden caro was a god who was the man on the cross? The Virgin? Was my mother praying to the wrong god?”(81). When Antonio is persuaded that the golden carp is as powerful as God, he begins to question his religious beliefs. Maria, his mother, wanted her children to follow the way of her Luna family. Gabriel, his father, wanted his children to travel to California with him. His father had a dream to move to California. “My father’s dream was to gather his sons around him and move westward to the land of the the setting sun, to the vineyards of California”(Anaya 14). Through the teachings of Ultima, he learns to see with his heart and to appreciate all the magic that nature beholds. The river of life is never ending like the river that binds the llano to Guadalupe. All that Antonio has experienced is symbolized in the river and the life that surrounds it. Ultimately, it is his teacher and friend, Ultima, which teaches Antonio that life is a cycle and that understanding oneself brings peace and harmony. The river also serves to bind the past, present, and future. In the novel Bless Me Ultima, by Rudolfo Anaya, he uses archetypes to connect the reader to every person whose has ever existed. By adding these archetypes to his work, it helps the reader connect to the novel and it helps us associate with the human experience. Through his experience as a writer, he found his own way of writing. Anaya can relate to many other authors in the way that they try to write a story from their roots and what their childhood was like, not like all the American books they are used to reading. His exposure to Lupito’s death triggered his loss of innocence. Anaya vividly expresses the situation as he states “the second volley of shots from the bridge sounded, they sounded like pigeons swirling to roost on the church top”, he metaphorically uses the birds removal from danger to safety as Antonio’s cue that something terrible had occurred and he has to remove himself from danger immediately. “He fell forward then clawed and crawled out of the holy water of the river onto the bank in front of me. I wanted to reach out and help him, but I was frozen by my fear”p22, after this experience, Antonio repeats the Act of Contrition, which had been taught by his mother as “the last prayer before death”. He resides on his fear for helping Lupito that he questions God, “Did God Listen?” p23. Six year old Antonio is left flustered as his greater awakening is happening however, he is never truly alone. Ultima, the owl, was vigilant towards him throughout the night, its soft hooting served as peace from the chaos in Antonio’s mind.
Anaya still utilizes the Golden Carp, a god who acts as a symbol of forgiveness. He grows to realize that this symbol offers a different perspective to many individuals than Catholicism. Which appears extremely loyal to Tony since the Christian God appears unforgiving and cruel. The carp can cause awe to anyone due to its beauty. Which eventually leads Tony to realize the existence of other gods. The hole of doubtness severely deepens as Tony's first communion occurs. As he eats God's body in the form of water, Antonio immediately wishes to hear or at least have a sign of the existence of God. He believes that once all of his doubts clear up he will finally have an answer to all of his uncertainties. However, “there was no sweetness” (236) and nothing seems to occur! Another example of the evolution of Tony's sense of good and evil through the utilisation of setting is Tony's own home. To him, his home provided him with warmth and safety. This was due to the people who lived in the house. Antonio's father creates a sense of protection in the home. When Tenorio and his men come to he house to take Ultima away, Tony's father "would let no man invade his home" (pg 123). This gave Tony faith that as long as his father was around, he would be protected. Antonio's mother made home a loving and caring place to be. She would always baby Antonio and give him the affection he needed whenever he needed it. The morning after Tony had seen Lupito killed, Ultima tells Tony's mother not to be too hard on Antonio; he had a hard night last night. His mother puts her arms around Tony and holds him saying he "is only a boy, a baby yet" (Pg.28). The Virgin also makes the atmosphere of Antonio's home peaceful and protected. Tony loves the Virgin Mary because "she always forgave" (Pg. 42). Tony thought she was "full of a quiet, peaceful love" (Pg.42) which she filled the home with. The most important person who contributed to the goodness of Antonio's home was Ultima. She made Antonio feel as though her presence filled the home with safety, love, and a sense of security. Through Olaudah Equiano’s personal experiences, the audience is able to learn just how dedicated he is to his faith in the religion and how it brings a sense of empowerment for his oppressed community. Religion is one of the defining features of Equiano’s life story. Equiano was first exposed to Christianity when he was about twelve years old and during his primary arrival in England and he first experienced the sight of snow. In the story, the death of Narciso and Lupito cause Antonio to doubt his religion because he cannot understand why God let them happen. Lupito’s death is significant because it is the first death that Antonio witnesses. The murder of Lupito causes Antonio to wonder about religion, sins, and death. After Lupito dies, Antonio says that “a priest could have saved Lupito” (Anaya 23). Antonio questions his religion and the power of a priest because the priest could not save Lupito. Antonio doubts if he is capable of being a priest and he is unsure of his destiny of becoming a one. When Antonio sees Lupito at the river, he believes that he should have been able to save Lupito’s soul, since he might become a priest. Because Antonio could not save Lupito, he feels regret. Antonio shows that he is feeling guilty when he asks himself, “How would I ever wash away the stain of blood?” (23). Antonio’s guilt implies that his future of being a priest might not be suitable for him because he should not feel guilt in something he is destined to do.
